Recommend me a Camera
« on: March 14, 2013, 06:59:06 AM »
Well, not really for me - for a coworker.

She's looking for a new Point & Shoot with good zoom, and that can take video.

Not brand sensitive and budget is under $300.

Commence!

These "sound" good - but I haven't been in the market for a camera in about 2 or 3 years so ...

I'm more partial to the Panasonic b/c I owned one and really like it.

I have used both brands in the past.  I have disliked every Panasonic camera I have ever tried.  Canon has been the opposite.  I have had Canon or Nikon for years and have been pleased with both.

We use Canons in the lab.  Four or six.  They have a very tough life over the last three years and have yet to fail.

Mine is older, maybe 6 years, and still humming along.

Go Canon.

>>I have disliked every Panasonic camera I have ever tried.<<

For why?

I liked mine b/c it was tough, took decent pix, virtually no lag time (the amount of time it took it to be ready to take the next pic), fit comfortably in pocket and had a good zoom.  It also stabalized my palsy pretty good.  And the battery life - think I would charge it maybe every other month and it would keep a charge like a mofo.

I found that w/my canon, if I'm zoomed in, the image stabalizer couldn't handle my palsy and the pix would be blurry.  Plus, it sucked on that battery like it was meth and the zoom wasn't was far (think it was 5x while the Panasonic was 18x)

Maybe you're on your own there DK... I have the same experience as Knuck.  My panasonic was shit.  I have loved every Canon I owned.

I'm not really in the point and shoot models anymore so I don't really have any recommendations.

My 2c: I love both Panasonic cameras that I own, but neither is a point and shoot.

My experiences are a bit old all things considered.  Still would not consider Panasonic, Samsung, or Casio.  Yuck.  All point and shoots, nothing any more than $200 or 300 range.

Obes are you thinking Casio?

I had one of those... decent.  Not great.  I'd still go Canon.

If she can catch a sale I hear nice things about this...

I concur. A co-worker has one, along with a decent DSLR. Guess which one gets most use?

I've been out of the point and shoot game for far too long, but based on past experience: I had a very nice panasonic that was an inbetween camera - not quite a full blown DSLR and not a simple point and shoot - loved it. Based on my experience with it I got two point and shoot panasonics, one for my folks and one for us - each was about $200. I'm sorry to say that they both fucking sucked. My parents still use theirs, but battery life blows. Overall performance blows too. Ours died within the first two years and my kids use it as a toy now.

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
