Title: Kindle Users
Post by: Steve on September 26, 2012, 10:09:09 AM
Is there a way to use Whispernet on your computer? I found a free ebook on Amazon I want but it says it needs to be downloaded with Whispernet and I do not have a kindle.

If not can someone grab it for me if I send the link and then email it over?

I love posting here, it always causes me to stumble on the answer. I found another button that allows me to read it on the cloud or deliver it to my Android.

In other news, you can totally sync to your own computer.

I had no idea there was even a Kindle Reader app for the desktop or that you could read kindle books through the website. I don't own a Kindle and traditionally I would rather purchase a physical book so this is all new to me.

Long done with physical books.  Don't miss them really.  Thought I would never take to a Kindle or the various multi-platform Kindle apps.  I do and am glad it is so.

I'm slowly adapting to the digital age. I still prefer to walk over to my bookcase and touch the book, pick one out, flip the pages. But digital is peaking my curiosity because I hate ordering a book and then waiting for it.

No matter what book(s) I am reading they are available to me in synched fashion anywhere I read.  No muss no fuss.  No hairy big feet.

this is going to be the greatest thing that ever happened to me. So many free books, so many great priced books....just one click. I don't think the anticipation of any devices arrival at my door has ever been so painful.

I will say it is awesome when you pre-order a book, forget you did it, and then get the email saying it has been delivered to your kindle :D

Can anyone recommend a screen protector? Not really interested in a case I just want something to keep the screen from getting scratched

No.

I looked into it and they just aren't designed for them.  The surface is designed to reduce eye fatigue.  Protectors add eye fatigue.  Live without one.  Trim your claws.

Also they are exceptionally durable.

I got the non touch model so the screen wont get touched reguarly. Im worried about my pocket, maybe i will get a cover. See how it goes for a while.

I think this is mine...

Mom ended up with Govs non-touch unit.  Liked the buttons.

I went with the non touch for budget reasons. Besides i only want to read books on it so doesn't need to be fancy and I don't want finger smudges.

I ordered what you ordered.  They sent a touch.  SO...

That said.  Glad it went that way.  Like it.  Smudging isn't really an issue.

I'm in love. It's bigger then I expected, even with a six inch screen I thought it would be a little smaller. It's a plus for me as I can easily read on it without my glasses. Two things I notice right off:

1) I see why people complain that it has no built in reading light. If you want to read it on an overcast day or in a bedroom with low light it's going to strain your eyes. That said it doesn't take much light to make it readable and the display is very very good.

2) The side buttons are a bit awkward. They are literally on the side, but activated as if they were right next to the screen. This makes it hard to use the Kindle with one hand, and they are not always responsive. Every ten pages or so I will skip a page because the button does not give me the expected feedback and the page turns can be sort of slow occasionally. The two seem to coincide.

Let's add two more. The keyboard on this one has a separate tab on it for uppercase letters, which makes typing on it cumbersome. I realize it is a base model, but they should have given us a shift key instead of another tab.

Lastly the one I ordered is the "Kindle 6inch with Special Offers". This is misleading, i thought i was getting extra stuff but what i get is built in advertising. I can remove it with a hack (I won't) but it is annoying, sort of.

I love it though. Going to get another one for the kid at Christmas.

Reading a book under low light blows just as much.

Advertising is actually useful on occasion.

I won't remove the ads because when I looked into it (surprised nothing extra was with it) I saw what they mean by special features and that to buy it without them was almost $30 more. I'm thankful for the nice price tag so they can stay.

How do they make the kindle version of the books? I ask because I am 75% through the first Hunger Games and I have noticed countless spelling errors, words that do not belong, punctuation errors, etc and I'm convinced there is no way in hell the print version of her book has all of these.

Good question.  I have had a couple of books that were so poorly converted that they were unreadable.

Google spit out a bunch of forums and yahoo answers saying it is most likely because authors scan their own books, but what sense does that make? A scanner cannot impart spelling errors lol.

It can if no one proofs the OCR (optical character recognition)....

Hmm that is a good point. Hunger Games is not too bad in that it typically does not disrupt or slow the reading. Some users report difficult books due to the errors.

I will say reading a book with the kindle is really convenient. It is lighter than every book I own, thin and easy to carry, and possibly the most appealing to me is no need to save my place unless I change books. I don't need to move a bookmark or find my place I just set it down and when i come back i'm right there.

I was concerned my eyes would tire, arms or hands would fatigue, and that overall it would be more effort to read then the traditional fashion and what I have found is the opposite.

I created a monster. Ashley wants the Fire now. So does Hayden, but he isn't getting a fucking fire. The entire point is because he needs to read more and likes gadgets and there are tons of free kids books and comics. Apparently his aunt has one and Ashley mentioned while using mine that we are going to get him the same one. He says "I want the fire like aunt whateverthefuckhernameis because it has games and the internet blah blah blah."

So i tell him no he has plenty of useless brainless things that do that. You know what he says? "Can I at least have an iPad then?".

This kid has a seriously warped view of life. He can have an iPad as soon as he buys one lol.

Dude...He's 7 and hasn't grown up with manners being a common thing...model it (including being polite to him) and he'll learn.....Besides - every 7 year old wants a tablet....

And trust me - you weren't polite ;)

Man I love my mom, this thing is the greatest gift in the world. I have been flying through books with nothing else to do, and I have a 9 hour hospital day coming up that will be filled with painful sitting around. I know the Kindle will add some serious comfort level.

One thing Amazon does with these devices that blows my mind in a negative way is putting such limitations on collection management. I use Calibre to manage my books, but Amazon doesn't allow us as consumers to manage collections and sync them, you can only manage them on the device which is a PITA unless you have a touch or keyboard. From Calibre:

Quote
Neither the Kindle nor the Nook provide any way to manipulate collections over a USB connection. If you really care about using collections, I would urge you to sell your Kindle/Nook and get a SONY. Only SONY seems to understand that life is too short to be entering collections one by one on an e-ink screen :)

Note that in the case of the Kindle, there is a way to manipulate collections via USB, but it requires that the Kindle be rebooted every time it is disconnected from the computer, for the changes to the collections to be recognized. As such, it is unlikely that any calibre developers will ever feel motivated enough to support it. There is however, a calibre plugin that allows you to create collections on your Kindle from the calibre metadata. It is available from here.

Note Amazon have removed the ability to manipulate collections completely in their newer models, like the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire, making even the above plugin useless. If you really want the ability to manage collections on your Kindle via a USB connection, we encourage you to complain to Amazon about it, or get a reader where this is supported, like the SONY Readers.
