Will all this work together?
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:36:49 PM »
Building a mini super computer for a guy in the offices with us. He wants something that he can do lots of parallel processing with. So basically dual quad core with lots of RAM. I'm out of my element when it comes to parts for dual CPU's so I'm looking for some help. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Like a better case or etc.

Case
Intel SC5650WSNA Pedestal, convertible to 6U Rack Server Case
CPU 2x
Intel Xeon E5405 2.0GHz LGA 771 80W Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard
ASUS DSBF-D16/SAS SSI EEB 3.61 Server Motherboard
Drives 2x
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
RAM 2x (16GB total)
Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM Dual Channel Kit Server Memory Model CT2KIT51272AF80E

Etc
BELKIN Hi-Speed USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card Model F5U220v1
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223L
D-Link DWA-556 PCI Express Xtreme Desktop Adapter

Grand Total: $1,676.89

He's willing to spend a bit of money on it so the price of components doesn't have to be as cheap as possible.

Your good to go, nice choices.

Suggestions:

Swap to a different motherboard. I hate ASUS for dual cpu applications. They tend to burn out faster then others. Suggest MSI, DFI, or Gigabyte.

Go with LG for the DVD. Cheaper and just as solid, usually somewhat better.

Fuck D-Link, buy linksys.

The etc stuff was just slapped on there without much though, pretty much just whatever was first in the list and major brand.

What about the Tyan boards, or Intel?

Never heard of Tyan. Havent used intel boards in years, but they used to carry limitations as far as tweakability and such.

Actually, for now he's planning to dual boot XP and Ubuntu 64bit (or other Linux). When it comes out, he'll install Windows 7.

But yes, assume 64 bit OS.

The OS is kind of irrelevant to the hardware. Everything he chose is powerful and will utilize 64 bit if he chooses to run it, but also be just fine with 32 bit.

Fine yes.  But a waste of over 4GB of memory.

I don't subscribe to that theory. Just because an OS cant recognize ram above its threshold doesn't mean that the extra power isnt being used.

He's well aware of the Windows XP limitation but he's probably going to be running in Linux most of the time so he'll be able to use the RAM, and once Windows 7 comes out he'll be swapping out XP for it and again be able to leverage the total amount.
He's going to be doing massively parallel processing of huge amounts of data. He's working on a special database.

He can get Windows 7 now (legally) and it's stable.
