transfer iTunes folder to a new computer?
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:41:21 PM »
so I bought my wife a new laptop, it will be 3 weeks before it comes and I'm antcy to wipe out her old laptops HDD and try to reinstall windows.

I've backed up all of her pictures and e-mails and files in "my documents"  and I want to make sure I won't have a problem reinstalling her iTunes library when the new computer comes.

I simply copied her entire iTunes folder onto an external HD.  Supposedly, from what I've read on the net, I can just paste this folder onto her new computer when it comes and everything will be the way it was?

Quote from: what i've read elsewhere on the intertubes
You can connect an external hard drive to your computer, find your iTunes library (On Windows, it’s the “My Music” folder. On a Mac, it’s just called “Music.”), and copy it to the hard drive to make a backup.

Once you have this backup, you can just copy it to your new computer or your old one, if you have a crash.

Am I missing a step or will something get fowled up? Anyone else ever do this?

Do i need to unsync her iPod from her old laptop or anything like that?  Will simply installing iTunes on the new computer and putting this folder back where I found it make everything work as before?

her lap top only has a CD burner, not DVD and its a little unstable right now - as it is, I'm not sure if I can even RUN iTunes (I haven't tried yet).  I can only load windows in safe mode and event then, most applications still crash with extended use.

So I suppose I could use the iTunes back up functionality to backup everything on her iPod - but I'll have to make sure 1) she already has at least version 7 installed on that lap top -- i doubt I can upgrade it at this point and 2) I'm worried that I could somehow fck everything up on her iPod like I did her laptop.

it would be nice to know that simply copying the iTunes folder back onto her new computer will produce the desired results.

;) I did this a while ago with my girlfriend's computer, her iTunes worked fine after copying the folder back.

Did I miss something here, didn't you just buy new RAM for your wife's current laptop?

edit: *reads other thread* ah, I see.

oh wait! This only works if you have iTunes set up to copy all imported music to it's local directory. If you have music in other places it will obviously not be included when you save the iTunes folder.

i *think* thats how its set up.  the iTunes folder has a ton of .mp4 files in it.

I'm not sure if ALL of the files she downloads from "other" sources end up in that folder but if they're not there its probably ok as she has burned a lot of songs to mp3-disks.

I just want to make sure that when she plugs her iPod into the new lap top (when it comes in 3 weeks and I copy the iTunes folder to it) that she'll be able to sync with no problems and all the songs will still be there and still work.
