going HD
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:48:38 PM »
We decided to get an HD TV finally. Our big tube TV is giving us some trouble (even though it is way minor trouble, it is a good excuse) so we want to replace it with an LCD. Plus it will be a mutual gift for Christmas; instead of buying some random small stuff, we're just going to get this. So I want some recommendations. We don't want anything super fancy like LED or 3D...just 1080p, 46-55 inch. Our budget is $1000 and this has to include a blue ray player.

What do you guys think?

Today I saw this at Sams:
http://www.hitachi-america.us/products/consumer/tv/products/archive/ar_lcdflat/details/L46S603.html

it was only $691 - seems like a good deal.  :dunno:

I really like my Samsung (46"). Although I'm pretty sure it was right at the 1k mark.

So do I, and so do the other five people I know with Samsung 46" HD TVs. I don't know what the prices are now, though (looks like Amazon has the latest version of it - ln46c650 - for just over $1000). Ours is ln46a550, but I wish I had the 650.

1080P, 120HZ, 3 to 4 HDMI inputs, 46" or above, HDCP compatibility, 3D (up to you)

I wouldn't image 120HZ is noticeably better than 60HZ unless you're playing games... then again, I have a 27" tube tv and no cable.

I wouldn't purchase a non-120HZ at this point.

I;m concentrating on LCDs, but should I look at plasmas at all? Seems that they have a nicer picture but a shorter lifetime?

Pick what you like.  The main issues with plasma have been minimized to the point that it doesn't matter anymore.

I notice the difference between 120Hz and 90Hz when watching football (and the Olympics). That's why I wish I had the 650 instead of the 550.

I'd get a 120 just not worry about LED for now. knuck can explain why. If you want to save a bit, drop down to a 40"; it's still plenty big for most uses.

I read that plasmas are higher than 120hz...or rather that it doesn't matter. but they put 120 on there because the LCDs have it....
