recording storage
« on: November 22, 2009, 07:54:34 PM »
Need some help from you guys. Right now I have a setup I record video from that consists of three wireless infared cameras that feed back to a reciever hooked into my laptop.

This is fine except the laptop hard drive is only 120gb and the external is 300gb both with other things that need to be on them.

This whole setup has to be mobile, so a desktop is out. It also needs to be independant of my laptop, in case I need to use the toughbook.

So anyone have any ideas? A terrabyte external could work, but I figured u may have better ideas.

Wireless NAS (sized up to 4TB now I think).

Or why not a typical wired NAS, like something from Linksys???

Ahh no stock, missed that.

I was at walmart and noticed they have 2GB WD Passports on sale for 99.99. might grab two of them for now, but ultimately a 4TB is ideal. Wired may be fine as well

Whatever happened to digital tapes?  Could you use those?

The problem with tapes is they add up so fast, and its harder to keep copies for the same reason. It's bad enough right now we have four tapes for each case, two audio and two video, to backup the digital equipment. Plus with the wireless infared cameras i am typically recording 6 to 8 hours of video at high res. Changing out tapes constantly and preserving them is so much harder compared to a massive hard drive and making backups.

I'm thinking of maybe using a DVR. I'm pretty sure i can rig the wireless reciver to record right to a DVR, and then just have two 2TB externals. one for storage, one for backup. This is the camera system i have if anyone has input.

Me and kermi talked on the phone earlier, but as I consider ideas I figure I should post the price range. Up to $450 is where I'm looking to stay. Already spent close to $2000 on the cameras lol. Plus that like 800 I dropped on sound forge and audition
