Going on Holiday
« on: July 31, 2009, 10:01:43 AM »
Unbeknownst to me, my best friend decided she was going to Boston, MA on holiday in October (28 - Nov 1) and I was accompanying her.

So imagine my surprise when I get an cc email from the airline with my itinerary.

So instead of fighting it, I'm going along with it.  I really should fight it, but hey, the tickets were free, I get free hotels with my marriott points so the only think I really need to worry about is transportation (rent a car or rely on taxis), meals and things to do - and I can get really cheap.

So this is where you come in (esp. those of you who live near the Boston or MA areas).  Can you recommend something for us to do while in Boston?  This can include restaurants, museums, parks, etc.

I'm doing some research on things to do in the area.  Even though the internet is helpful - I like to rely on recommendations from people I know.

Let the recommending begin!!

I've only been to Boston once, but when we were there we enjoyed going to Faneuil Hall to eat. Probably a very touristy thing to do, but you have enough days there that you can do it at least once.

We also went on some historical tour, something to do with Paul Revere, but it wasn't exactly memorable.

eat at Fire & Ice

take in a Bruins game (they're playing the Edmonton Oilers that Saturday afternoon)

drink at the Boston Beer Works before/after the game (its across the street -- next to a dozen other pubs/bars)  see also: http://drinkboston.com/bars/

if you're staying in the city (or near by) don't rent a car - "the T" takes you everywhere! Its clean, safe and pretty cheap. Even on weekends traffic is a mess and there's a reason Massachusetts drivers are called "Mass-holes"

go to "Faneuil Hall" (aka Quency Market) its mad-crazy packed with tourists but its on the list of things you have to do.  (its basically just shopping and restaurants in a crowed area.  People who enjoy such touristy crap also must go on the duck tour

eat at Legal Seafoods

walk the freedom trail

Theres a great science museum and also the New England Aquarium

blow all your money, or just window shop on Newbury Street

check out the campus of one or more of the 50+ colleges/universities in the city -- including MIT, Berklee music, BU, BC, Harvard, UMass, etc...

get a cupcake at the kick ass cupcakes micro-bakery

The stadium is a bit of a ride south on the T but the Pats aren't playing that weekend so the crowds shouldn't be to bad at Patriot Place - Gillette Stadium.  Tons of shopping, plus the NFL's Patriots pro-shop and stadium!

also, while in town you must at some point buy a "Yankee's Suck" T-Shirt from a street vendor and eat some Clam Chowder.

there's more, but I'm at work and can't think of everything right now.  Also, if you have a car, you could always visit Hartford... I'm 90 minutes away.

edit: almost forgot, I've always wanted to take the Sam Adams Brewery Tour -- but haven't had a chance to yet: http://www.yelp.com/biz/samuel-adams-brewery-boston

Expensive, but I enjoyed it. Try not to go when it's too busy, though, you'll wait forever to get your food.

walk the freedom trail

That's the one. If you like that stuff, you'll probably like this, especially if the weather is nice. I think it stops near Faneuil Hall if you want to combine the two (like we did).

Micah - WOW that's a lot of stuff, but I'm sure we'll do most, if not all of those, esp. the Sam Adam's tour - she is a fan of beer.

Gonna have to copy your post and send it to my travel companions so that they can figure out what they want to do.

Usually, when we travel, we usually get to do a day of the things we want to do - so I may "edit" the email to my friends to omit the things I want to do while there.
