bought some books
« on: December 26, 2005, 10:31:21 PM »
So I went into Borders to spend some of the gift card cash I got for Christmas, this is what I got:

the case for christ - Lee Strobel
the days run away like wild horses over hills - bukowski
Selected prose of ezra pound
by the river piedra I sat down and wept - paulo coelho
the fifth mountain - coelho
the brothers karamazov - dostoevsky (a new translation which i don't have)
the antichrist - nietzsche
sophie's world - jostein gaarder

I'm not sure what I'll read first - I heard very good things about "sophie's world", anyone here read it?

I've read Sophie's World - I checked it out and got it for a younger family member a few years ago. It does what it does very well - introduces some fundamental philosophical ideas and mechanisms for younger people, particularly girls, since 'Sophie' is herself a girl. It's definitely worth a look but I suspect it may be a bit too 'young' for you but, if you've got a 12-16 year old female family member with a few more watts burning in her head than the usual contemporary cultural mush, then it would likely be a good one to pass on.

Isn't The Antichrist one of those books written as tool to take money from people who think the world is ending? (Like the the Left Behind series?)

Sorry, name doesn't ring a bell. Of course, I could google it...but that would require work.

I've been meaning to read this for awhile. I get up to Canto III of The Inferno then stop for some reason.

Now, now, play nice.

Nietzsche was a philosopher from way back when and conceptualized the whole "God is dead" thing.  I think "The Antichrist" was more about the differences between Jesus as a person and Christianity as a religion.

Actually that's only a half-quote...and probably the most misunderstood quote of all time.

Currently reading "Ulysses" by Joyce.
