i can download as many as i need. it is the author or publisher that mandates it only be in acsm format (adobe edition) and not regular pdf. so using edition i saved a pdf but its drm protected. i can view it on my android with akidos but i really need the drm removed for my laptop.

unless theres a ubuntu program to open pdf or epub files using adobe auth.
