Title: Easter
Post by: Jake on March 29, 2013, 03:09:22 PM
So how do you heathens celebrate this blessed holiday?

In Poland Easter is a pretty big deal - at least the way I remember it. Religiously it is "bigger" than Christmas.

Traditionally we go to church on Saturday to bless our Easter basket(s) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%9Awi%C4%99conka).Usually we'll have some bread, butter, salt&pepper, a few eggs and a piece of sausage. Kids have their own baskets :) we then start our Sunday breakfast with this food.

Good Friday is strictly no meat - and even though I don't know why anymore - we stick to this tradition in my house and eat potatoes and herring.

On Sunday we have a big dinner - this year I'm smoking a pork brown roast. We'll have my best friend's family over for the weekend.

Used to be way more religious for me but now I'm just a godless sinner ;-).  We are having dinner on Sunday with the in-laws and doing the Easter bunny stuff with the kids. Otherwise it won't be that much of a difference for us as far as weekends go.

To this day I still don't understand this.

Not sure what I'm going to do for Zombie Jesus day.  Probably not much.

We'll be going to church like we do every week, then hiding some plastic eggs in my parents back yard for Colbie to find.  Thats about it.

We did make Colbie her first Easter basket that we plan on giving her on Sunday.  Nothing fancy, a couple candies and one or two toys from the $1 bins at Target.

Oh, forgot to mention:  At least in Catholicism Easter is a bigger deal than Christmas.  Easter just doesn't have the massive gift giving machine behind it shoving it down everyone's throat

I decorated some eggs yesterday because I felt like it.

I had given up red meat for all off lent, so instead of not having meat on Fridays, I decided to not eat breads, pastas, rice, etc.

I'll be going to special services tonight and Sunday and then hopefully stuffing my face with some BBQ and beer* to celebrate my return to red meat.

*No beverages besides water too. But the money I saved doing that is getting donated to build wells.

Wait.  I thought bigfoots were naturally druidic in religious affiliation.  Not totally godless.  Also I think they steal eggs from nests.

I'm not a strict follower.

Wife is going with sister-in-law to Lutheran services in the morning.  (wife's brother and his wife are in town from Finland)  I will be a heathen at home with my brother-in-law, his son, and my four children.  Then we all truck on over to my sister's house for egg searching and lunch with her husband and their two kids.  Seven young kids and 8 adults (counting my mom and dad as adults).

We were all in church last week for my son, Eeli's, baptism.  I go because I married into Finnish Lutheran-ism, more or less... but there is also a part of me that likes it.  I do find a bit of peace and solace in the church.  If anything, it gives me time to reflect.

At any rate... have a nice Easter, the culmination of the holy week for some of you.

Happy Easter ya'll.

I think I've been to church like 3 times in the past 6 years.  Today was no different.

My wife went to her coworker's Pentecostal church again. My brother in Indiana texted me a link to his church's live stream.  They're one of those big midwest churches with like a full band and orchestra and stuff.  I think Mike Pence used to go there.  Production value for the video was really professional.  So I watched their service.  It was kinda nice and I sorta wish I was there.  There are no churches around here like that.  I haven't found anything in my area that I enjoy going to.  The ones that have good worship music tend to have wacky theology and the ones that have great preachers have boring music and only like 40 people attending, most over the age of 65. LOL.

Whether you celebrate or not, hope you're all having a good day with family and/or friends!

Not sure I'd want anything to do with a church Mike Pence would be a member of.

Might be too liberal for you but: https://www.uua.org/find/results?state=CT  I think you said you were in/near Hartford which has 3 churches with 250+ members.  Which should mean 100+ people at Sunday service.

I'm totally on board with the 7 principles of UU and I like the openness and acceptance of letting people discover their own truths; but I like having a standardized dogma (but not necessarily doctrine) to base my beliefs on.
