Hot dog buns and bread making
« on: June 18, 2012, 03:57:44 PM »
Anyone know where to get decent hot dog buns?  I can only find crappy ass wonder bread style white bread and crappy ass wonder bread style white bread that we dyed brown to make it look like wheat buns.  Rolls are often too large for the dog.

Been craving a good hot dog for awhile and every time I try to fulfill it the bun falls so short.

I mean, don't get me wrong Steve, you just don't seem like the type of guy who would do that. Actually, I don't think I know a single person that gets hot dog buns at a bakery!

I can believe getting bread from a bakery, and even using fresh baked rolls for burgers, but hot dog buns? come on.

But speaking of bread - what do you guys get? We DO get fresh baked bread only - from a Polish bakery - it is awesome and has poppy seeds on the crust. We also really like fresh baked sourdough and ciabbata (sp?) from this supermarket called Mariano's.

I don't think I have ever purchased a wonderbread type bread in my life. Hot dog buns and burger buns are a different story.

I've gotten hot dog rolls from a baker before but only for brats since they're a lot bigger than hot dogs and don't fit hot dog buns as well.

I get my bread from Great Harvest - it's a lot more expensive than the store but I only buy bread once a month or so.

I'm a great value brand guy 99.9% of the time. I take my time with my grill very seriously though and a great burger or brat can be ruined or at least diminished by a shitty bun or roll. So I actually go out of my way for this one. Close to 40 miles out of my way actually (round trip).

Speaking of breads...

I am making bread today/'tomorrow.  I have the poolish bubbling now.  It will be a whole grain white flour mix with fresh dill added for fun and excitement.

Anybody else make it by hand rather than a bread machine?  I am actually going to have to use a mixer tomorrow as kneading it will be too rough on the shoulder.

I have never made it without the machine, unless you count pizza dough

Yeah, growing up we used to make bread by hand.  I think I only hand kneaded one christmas cause we were making a lot of stuff.  That is hard work.

It is tough work, but only for a couple minutes.  The time comes in waiting for all of the risings.

Think you will ever do it again?

For bread?  Probably not.  For baking Christmas treats?  Yeah.

I've only baked bread a couple times but I've never used a breadmaker.
