Title: Free Kindle Books
Post by: kermi3 on June 13, 2010, 09:43:28 AM
I just discovered there are a bunch of free ones...either historical stuff or promotions here (http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_85650291_13?ie=UTF8&node=2245146011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-1&pf_rd_r=1M2PTMV5ZTQGG912NNMY&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1263592582&pf_rd_i=1286228011).

I am reading this one right now, pretty good...

Kerm.  We already talked about that series in here.

Anyhoo, it starts out good but falls apart later.

Meh - I'm still enjoying book 2 so I'll enjoy it while it lasts...

True, but the iPhone and Droid Apps work well enough...

So how do your guys feel about the Kindle? I've been thinking about it. Part of that is all the Project Gutenberg books and whatnot that are available for free. It's like, having an entire instant-on library + bookstore in your hands. Worth it?

I am really tempted to get one, esp when I leave for Kuwait.

I may break down and get one while I'm there - might use some of my bonus money for that.

Does anyone have a Kindle who doesn't commute a long distance or travel a lot?  If I was still on the road all the time, I could really see the benefit, but as it is I don't really see the need when I've got bookstores everywhere and two decent libraries a mile from my house

But I still want one because of nerd envy

I know 4 people who have one who use it at home and work (they don't travel and even though they have a commute, they're driving) and love it.

I really want an e-book that you can annotate (underline, highlight, write notes in the margins). Mostly for reading papers. I'm actually thinking about an iPad just for that reason.

Me too!

Well, 167 after tax.

And I answered my own question - how's that for productivity!

Yeah but after I said that I bought one apparently my wife said I should have bought two

Getting in trouble for not buying enough expensive electronic gadgets :(

>FYI Amazon purchased WOOT!.

I know, hopefully this means a broader selection of stuff for them to offer (like Kindles!)

Hmm, I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that I didn't see woot before they were sold out.

Apparently in CA you don't have to pay a tax for Amazon stuff. W00t.

No fair!

I get charged tax when I buy from Amazon (at least I think I do).

I know Woot charges me tax b/c their HQ is in Carrollton, TX so I get the honor of paying sales tax.

But now that they're owned by Amazon, I wonder if that'll change - probably not since they just charged me tax yesterday.

Wish my Kindle was hear today :(

You're supposed to declare these things when you file your state income tax and pay it then. Don't you do that for all your untaxed internet purchases?!?

Of course I do.  I just don't make any untaxed internet purchases ;)

Here's how you figure it out (a kind person on the woot site told me how to do it).

You get your order number from your email.

Go to the fedex site and track by reference.  paste the order number into the reference field and change the "date" field to 7/1/2010 and enter you zip and it'll find your order and when it'll be delivered.

My friend checked hers but, she has a POBox and has to wait for the email from woot that tells her there's an issue delivering her stuff.

Nothing - usually when they've shipped it the status changes, so I think it's still in the warehouse

>>Do they allow you to highlight passages?<<

Yes, you can even make notes "on the margin" - pretty cool.

>>Nothing - usually when they've shipped it the status changes, so I think it's still in the warehouse<<

My status on my account still says "everything's set" or something to that effect.  Doesn't reflect the fact that it's been shipped or that I've already charged it up.

You obviously have some sort of Texas-connection that I don't because I never get anything from woot in less than a week or so.

Sometimes WOOT takes forever to get stuff to you.

Basically every time in my case, but everything I've ever ordered off there is a luxury and not a necessity, so I don't really care.

I have had mixed luck.  Some things arrive almost overnight some take weeks.

I do hope this shows up sometime this week, since I'm going out of town next week and it would be nice to be able to take it with me.

I'm dumb and was doing it wrong - it shows on fedex as shipped with a predicted delivery of thursday :)

It came today - big ups to fedex for leaving in the middle of my porch so it could get drenched.

I fucking love this thing so far.

Bought a mixed book of poems, loaded up some stuff from Gutenberg via Calibre (NECESSARY: http://calibre-ebook.com/), bought the paper (which I get free in the office, but whatever), and today I loaded up a few docs I had to read for work as PDFs (update your kindle, folks -- it comes with 2.3 software, and 2.5 lets you read PDFs) and finished them up on my lunch break. Really much nicer than dealing with a stack of papers or a phone.

This rules so hard considering the website I just got with free books has everything in epub.
