Coexisting with OS's
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:59:23 PM »
Ok here is my current setup for my dual boot system. I'm wondering what you guys think  :dblthumb2: Right now i am basically keeping all my documents on the share so i can use them in both. I also keep downloads here seperated by OS they are for.

Only stinky part is in like windows my "Pictures" link the start menu wont get my pics, cause they arent there....lol. I use linux most, though. The reason i am doing this is because i hate having three different versions of my pics folder and then trying to sync them all up once or twice a week, same with music. Too much work.

So, thoughts?

C: - NTFS, 50GB, Vista
E: - FAT32, 145GB, Shared
F: - Ext3, 50GB, Ubuntu
G: - Swap, 5GB (3GB ram installed)

Here's my take.. if you can't completely give up an OS because you need it for certain things, why not just stick with one?  Using two seems like a giant pain in the ass and a waste of valuable storage.

Because i literally need Vista only for two video games that i love. Alot.

Aside from that, i never boot Vista. Really i can shrink c: down to about 25 gigs (half) but i gave it room to grow. Ubuntu certainly doesnt need 50 gigs, but its there so why not. To be honest when that 150GB gets low i will stick a large capacity drive (300GB or another 250GB) into the second bay.

What decade are you living in? My boss just picked up a 1TB drive for just over $100. You can even get 500GB laptop drives for pretty cheap.

My point was... why waste it on an OS you barely use.  It sucks having to worry about backups and updates and shit on one OS... why you would want to bother with 2 is beyond me.

Trust me, I have nearly a TB in my own machine and it didn't cost me much.  But every little bit still counts.

I'm only backing up the shared drive files, that's where everything is. I also have an image file I can restore from.

Vista is basically only for the few games, but I like them. It is also useful if I need DW.

I use Ubuntu almost completely at home. I occasionally need windows for MS Office (work) and Open Office wont do much of the high end things I need.

To get around it I run Windows XP through Virtualbox. That works for me

Sounds like a pretty weak solution for gaming.

VB isnt a solution if you require a mounted image (which i do) or want to use something via USB like a controller (like i do).

Aside from that it works great for basic stuff.

Use NTFS for the shared drive. NTFS-3g has had very stable read/write access to NTFS for several years and that makes it native in windows. Install ext2fs in windows for good measure too (will read and write to ext3 but doesn't use journaling).

Everything i read suggests i should avoid using ntfs for the sake of my data because its not natural for linux

I've used the Linux NTFS for accessing data off another partition. No problems for me.
