Title: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: ober on January 06, 2012, 01:48:24 PM
So, let's have em:

Steelers vs. Broncos: Broncos - Steelers aren't healthy enough this year (and it pains me to say that)
Cincinnati vs. Houston: Houston - I don't think Dalton is ready yet
Atlanta vs. Giants: I don't really care..... Giants
Lions vs. Saints: Saints but I'll be secretly rooting for the Lions

I just entered into a pool. For $10, fuck it. This is how I put it, and then how Ashley entered hers. People call me crazy, but you'll see.

Steelers vs Broncos: Steelers. Tebow is not going to beat the Steelers in the post season, and their defense is not going to stop Ben and the offense in the post season even if Ben looses a whole friggen leg.

Bengals vs Texans: Bengals.

Atlanta vs Giants: Giants.

Lions vs Saints: Saints. The Lions....man I would love to see them win, but the Saints are deadly in the post season and Brees is a monster. But, the Lions absolutely stand a chance. I'm banking this bet on Brees.

Then I have:

Steelers vs Patriots: Steelers. Call this wishful thinking, I say this matchup is 50/50.

Bengals vs Ravens: Come on, who isn't going to pick the Ravens here?

Green Bay vs Giants: Green Bay

SF vs Saints: Saints

Green Bay vs Steelers (Super Bowl): Steelers. Points total 60.

Not sure any teams have ever met in the SB two years in a row.

Ashley picked:

Steelers vs Broncos: Broncos
Bengals vs Texans: Bengals
Atlanta vs NY: Atlanta
Lions vs Saints: Lions

Broncos vs Pstriots: Patriots
Ravens vs Bengals: Ravens
Packers vs Falcons: Packers
SF vs Lions: Lions

Patriots vs Ravens: Patriots
Packers vs Lions: Packers

Patriots vs Packers: Packers, total points 57.

No offense, but you're a fucking idiot if you think the Steelers are going to the Super Bowl, let alone winning it this year.  Have you watched them play this year?  It's lackluster at best.  Downright sad at other times.  They lack the flare and sheer power of past years.  The only thing they have going for them is Brown right now and if Ben can't hit him 80% of the time on a bad leg, they're fucked.  The only thing that is going to keep them in any game is the defense and Clark is out and he plays a big role.

>>Steelers vs Patriots: Steelers. Call this wishful thinking, I say this matchup is 50/50.

yeah, the Steelers defense is insane but I've heard their offense has slacked a bit recently.  The patriots are in the opposite boat with a horrible D all year but the team has kept afloat by offensive dumb luck and tom brady's dreamy eyes.  It'll be a good game if that is in fact that match up on the 14th.

Post by: PJYelton on January 06, 2012, 04:27:34 PM
I think the Steelers have a great chance of making the Super Bowl solely because of how weak the AFC is this year.  I would put the Patriots as the best chance with the Steelers being second.  I think Baltimore is way overrated and everyone else just sucks.  I honestly think the Broncos are the worst team to ever make the playoffs.

Steelers in a blowout
Texans in a close one
Falcons in a close one
Saints in a blowout

Here we go....

Bengals at Texans - Toughest one this week. Between the Bengals being the Bengals and Houston being so hurt and on a losing streak...I'll go with Houston...

Lions at Saints - I don't like the Lions being healthy or the Saints being a bit banged up....they're the Saints...but I cautiously think we eek this one out...the Dome is REALLY loud and hard for opponents. I think it's a great advantage.

Falcons at Giants - Giants. Fuck the dirty birds.

Steelers at Broncos - I think the Steelers will limp by. I think that defense is too good and will get in Tebow's head.  It'll be close though because Pit is so banged up.

Next week -

Saints at 49ers - Saints.  I think we match up better here. We are decent at run stopping recently, and even though San Fran has that insane D - if we stick to balance I think we can beat them.

Giants at Green Bay - GB - I don't think that needs explanation.

Pitt at Baltimore - Baltimore wins again.  Steelers are too banged up

Houston at NE - New England....easily

Conference Championshps:

Nola at GB - I can't bring myself to pick Nola.  I want to, and I think we match up well thanks to GB's injuries - and because we're smoking hot now, but I can't manage the disappointment.

Bal at NE - NE is tough at home. NE

Super Bowl: GB vs NE - GB - I think they've got the better defense and the offenses are evenly matched. Same goes if it's Nola vs. NE - bottom line I think the NFC will win.

Crazy Cheez's Guide to the Playoffs

There are 4 divisions in each conference.  The winners of each division make up the 1-4 seeds for each conference, arranged in order of record (and then tiebreakers if record is the same).  The 5 and 6 seeds are the Wild Cards, which are the two best records in the conference, again in order of record.  This weekend is Wild Card Weekend, which means the 1 and 2 seeds each get a bye and 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5.  The higher seed always gets homefield.  After this week, the 1 seed plays the lowest remaining seed and the 2 plays the other team.  The week after that, conference championships, the week after that is the Pro Bowl, and then the Super Bowl!

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

SO follow-up predictions:

New England vs. Denver: New England.  I don't think it will be close.
Baltimore vs. Houston: Baltimore.  Houston doesn't stand a chance.
Saints vs. 49ers: Saints.  I think Brees is unstoppable right now.
Packers vs. Giants: Packers.  No question.

I'll go ahead and make my remaining predictions now:

Baltimore vs. New England: Baltimore.  I think they're crafty enough to out-wit Brady.
Saints vs. Packers: I think Saints in a high scoring game.

So Baltimore vs. Saints in the Superbowl, Saints winning but a close one.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: Steve on January 08, 2012, 10:07:31 PM
I'm actually right there with you, except I think its going to be Saints and NE.

And Tebow is not good enough to be as cocky as he is. God he is in love with himself. If the Pitt Def wasn't half assing it, we would have had the game. Ben looked great for being hurt, that's a tough dude.

Bummer, missed this thread til now. I was 2-2, missing both today. For next week I pick all the top seeds. I actually think the Saints will win, it's not quite the 49ers time, but I don't want to pick against my team.

Wow, just wow, can't believe that not only did we win that game but we actually even looked halfway decent doing it.  My own fault for not picking the Broncos though, I've seen a hundred different sports movies play out exactly like Tebow's season, of course he was going to win at the big one at the end.

I have always been an outspoken devoted fan to both, actually. It was the end of the 2008 season that I decided the Eagles were no longer worth any amount of fandom and it was 2009 that I said it on here. I also said when they drafted Big Ben that it would change the Steelers forever and they would be a dominant force to be reckoned with, and I was right. There is nothing bandwagon about my passion for the Steelers, and I will continue to get behind them 100% even if they start sucking, which they won't. Even when they suck they kick ass.

The Steelers defense spent the game with the rest of the team - in the Trainers room...that game was disgusting - though the overtime was amazing and one of the better playcalls I've ever seen.

I'm sticking with all of my picks - just swap Pitt losing this week for Denver losing this week - perhaps it's stupid to pick against the Blessed one again, but I just don't see them winning....
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

It shouldnt have been a good playcall because it was completely predictable and the Steelers defense im used to seeing would have seen it coming.

The run first team going long?  And I read somewhere that presnap, they had a reciever go in motion in a manner that they'd used all day to setup a run block...thus they got the safeties creeping down without even needing play action - and boom....

...and it's Blessed.

Yo, kermiE... you do realize that there will be actual dust and dirt on the field Saturday, right? It's not just home field. This will be a real football game played on a real field with real grass. Quick little Sproles and friends won't be so quick with a little turf in their cleats and wind in their faces. It takes real men to win in conditions like that. Manly men. Justin Smith is a manly man. Patrick Willis is a manly man. Andy Lee is a manly man. Vernon Davis is an excellent tight end. Blake Costanzo is a manly man. Frank Gore is a manly man. Be ready.

Hey kermi3000, how's Jimmy Graham going to kick Vernon Davis' ass without getting a penalty for coming off the sideline when his team is on defense? What's VD going to do with Alex Smith getting him the ball? Score touchdowns, baby. Score touchdowns. You know who will be stuck to Graham like glue? A certain number 52. Yeah, that rhymes. Do you know what it looks like when a linebacker gets a "pass defensed" while covering a tight end? Prepare for 5 of those. In the first quarter.

Umm... kermibush, there are simply too many good 49ers teams for you to remember them all. You can ask New York Giants fans about Jeff Garcia and the last time the 49ers were in the playoffs. I know, too many great teams and players to keep track of that someone as forgettable as Garcia could be overlooked. Yet he'd probably be your franchise's third best QB ever (sorry Bobby Hebert). Too bad that Brees fellow will play more like Walsh than Manning Saturday.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: ober on January 11, 2012, 11:03:18 AM
Yes, I DVR them but I start watching about an hour/hour and a half in.  So by the time the game ends, I'm usually about caught up.  Or not.  You'll understand once you have kids.  Trust me.  Both of my kids love football at this point but they can only take it for about 30-45 minutes before they wander off to play.

I don't know how people can stand to sit through the 10 instant replays after each play or the boring as fuck analysis throughout... let alone the commercials.  Trust me, give it a try and you'll see I'm right.  You just have to avoid looking at your fantasy scores or anything live for a few hours.

meh, if its not live there's no suspense for me.  Might as well just tune in for the last 20 minutes to see how it ends.

also, ASPCA commercials == instant channel change.  Its a rule in my house. I haven't seen more than the first few seconds of one in years.

I don't understand.  What I'm doing is basically live and I don't get stuck watching the shit I don't want to watch.  I think you guys are thinking about it all wrong.

Are you telling me that none of you pause it to go do other things for a few minutes?  So then you're a few minutes behind or something?  What I'm doing is really no different.  I'm just more than a few minutes behind.

I don't DVR or pause football, ever. Theres no point because if a game is on my buddy Jose is texting me, and if i'm watching it i'm harassing kermi. Besides it kills the suspense. And yea commercials suck ass but I like beer with my games so they give me a chance to piss.

I usually post in gameday threads as it's going, so I can't really do it that way

There's a guy at work who routinely DVRs games and then watches them after work the next day.  He's adamant that we don't tell him anything about it but he always has it spoiled for him by the end of the day
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: ober on January 11, 2012, 12:44:36 PM
If I DVR a game and don't watch at least part of it before it ends, I just delete it.  Watching it the next day is just insane.  But then again I don't post in live threads during games and no one is texting me so I suppose we live in different worlds.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

That's my biggest thing is I won't watch it the next day, and I see no point in catching up when I can go right to the live feed and be caught up. Anything worth watching I missed will be on post game and talk shows. Plus after games there is often other programming I want to see, and it becomes a hassle to always be catching up and DVRing.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

I'm with ober. I can understand watching live I you're interacting with others while the game is on (duh!), but otherwise I only watch games live from the start if I'm already watching tv when it comes on. Also, I'll watch some games a day later, depending on how important it is to me. I prefer to see things myself rather than read about them or watch highlights.

The kids thing is the biggest. I have so little time to watch my stuff that if I want to see something like the BCS title game I just record and fast forward through it in an hour. I can't justify three hours for a college football game between teams I don't care about when dishes need to be done, babies need to be washed and there are 15 to-dos on my list.

For me, this doesn't make sense.  I watch the games to see individual performances.  To actually see how badly the high ankle sprain is affecting Ben or to see if the defense is able to make consistent stops.  Jumping in part of the way through and missing half of the action isn't the same and you can't really get a feel for a team by watching 15 seconds of highlights on sportscenter.

Also, your last statement makes me think you haven't truly adapted to DVR living.  Besides sports, I almost never watch anything the same day it is on.  I have 3 episodes from Modern Family from last fall on my Tivo right now.  I have this past week's Once Upon a Time episode sitting there waiting for me to watch.  Free yourself from the shackles of tv programming times.

This is me.  90% of what I actually watch on TV is sports, and we've talked about why I do that live, so I really don't use my DVR for much of anything.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: ober on January 11, 2012, 01:34:36 PM
Here is the revelation I had when we got our first Tivo.  We used to spend a lot of time channel surfing when there wasn't anything on we wanted to watch for sure.  And I'm sure you can probably find sports of some kind on anytime.  But what about the times that all you can find is a shitty NBA game that you don't care about?  BOOM.  Watch something you DVR'd already.  My other big complaint about TV in general is that I was never watching it when shit I wanted to see was on.  Now I have my Tivo setup to record things that I actually want to watch that I would otherwise not be available for or wouldn't have time to watch.  Dirty Jobs, Modern Marvels, shit on the cooking channels, etc.  Now we always have something we WANT to watch and we can watch it whenever we want however we want.  Get interrupted?  Finish it later.  Want to make a snack? Pause it indefinitely.

And maybe part of the reason you guys don't use it as much is because you're using some shitty cable dvr or something.  I think the Tivo is WORLDS beyond the average DVR and really changes the way you look at TV in general.

Ober speaks truth.

(Although the satellite companies' DVRs are comparable to TiVo so the shitty cable company DVR comment only applies to shitty cable companies.)

I don't watch a lot of TV either, but at least I don't sit there and channel surf unless that is specifically what I feel like doing (once or twice a year). I don't watch commercials any more either. Why would you want to do that? Honestly, I don't have a good understanding of why someone would not be a major DVR user unless (a) their DVR is shitty or (b) they just haven't really gotten into that mindset yet.

How could you find out the score if it hasn't finished yet? We're mostly talking about recording it, then pressing play about an hour in.

Or in my case, pressing play when I have time, then pausing it again if I catch up too soon and going to do something else for a half hour, then coming back.

When we had comcast I didn't DVR very often, and it would get full. With Directv not only is the DVR awesome, but the storage capacity is crazy. I literally have 18 series recording reguarly, and so much other stuff we click on and it is only 4% full. Ashley has like 16 episodes of Planet Earth she hasn't watched and with Comcast I could only store say 3-4 of those before it would fill up.

The team isn't designed around Tebow, the team is just shitty period so they stick to the one thing they do well which is run and option.  We don't have a number one receiver, have no tight ends, and our running back is a has-been who hasn't played a full season in four years.  I am still undecided on how I feel about Tebow, but I do honestly believe that no QB could have gotten more than 9 wins out of this team this year.

And congrats to the 49ers, they had to win to keep alive the streak of 10 different teams in 10 years making the Super Bowl from the NFC.

Sorry, kermi3. Tough loss. Obviously a great win for the Niners. I'm pretty darn excited at the moment.

Honestly, there are so many things that happened the way they always do for that team, the only real surprise was that they scored Touchdowns instead of field goals on those last two drives.

And cheez, they have it as football only (no more dirt infield) but they're building a new stadium in a city a little to the south so they won't do any major changes with the seats and stuff.

Tebow will be great within three years, IF he can take tonight's game and get some perspective. That kid has a ton of talent, he just loves himself too damn much. If he could pull his head out of his ass, go down a few notches, and listen to the coaching staff he has potential.

He can scramble with the best of them, and he has a good arm and pretty good instincts but he needs to work on the pocket and drop back. They need to graduate from the option because it's "college like" and won't work next season like it did this year.

Take for example the one first down Denver had. They rolled Tebow out to his left and had him throw on the run down the sideline to his receiver. He put the ball perfect on target from an awkward position on the run. Then towards the end of the game he let one loose down the field into coverage and it was almost picked after bouncing off the receivers hand. That throw was PERFECT and reminded me of the wild Drew Brees throw for that touchdown where it was thrown into double contact coverage. The receiver fucked up for Tebow and it looked bad, but he threw a dangerous pass right on the money.

As a QB, he is good. As an NFL QB, he sucks because he doesn't have the experience to try and operate where he is. He needs to take some perspective. He reminds me of the Jet's QB who got cocky his rookie season and made an ass of himself.

Well of course, that what me and most others have been saying all this time.  He is winning due to leadership which will only last for so long, if he wants to stick around for the long run he needs to improve many aspects of being a QB and is going to need some real talent around him.

I disagree on the head up his ass part though, the media is the one going crazy over the whole story.  Every time I've heard him talk he has been nothing but modest and has given all of the credit to the rest of the team.

Did you miss the interview before the Steelers game? He came across like a cocky ass hat.

I don't think leadership is getting him buy as much as luck and the media frenzy. I think the fans are behind the team more then they have been in a long time, and THAT drives the rest of the team and in that drive and in Tebows feet and luck (or faith, whatever) they have come out with wins.

I wouldn't say drastically, I just feel that he can find a sure foot in the NFL is he can reel in the ego and improve on some of his key issues. If he could find some comfort in the pocket and not be so quick to run or scramble like a blinded monkey he would have a dangerous passing game with the right WR's.

Tebow's a good story, but he's not the long term answer and Elway knows it. He'll either make a big FA signing or get someone in the draft

I agree, he is not the right long term answer or git there. Elway got him in there knowing that eventually Tebow would start and the frenzy from his college career would bring fire and fans to a team that needed some momentum, and it will generate the ability to spend money to get some good people.

Tebow will end up as the big pick for a team that needs a QB that can make things happen and needs the same fuel that Denver needed. I could see him drafted as a starter for Oakland Raiders, the Jaguars, someone like that.

After a few years of bouncing around and learning from a few different coaching staff's you are going to see him in the ranks next to Brady, Manning (Eli....Peyton is a tough one right now), Ben, Rodgers, and my other prediction Stafford.

I hate him because of ego only. I really never thought he could make it in the NFL, I'm still not confident that he will unless he can step back and take stock in where he actually is and work on it. Last night Tebow was not the problem on the Denver offense, and he did an interview before the game about how excited he is for the off season to know he is the starter and to be able to be coached as one. So maybe, just maybe, he can STFU and improve.

He's got the worst throwing mechanics in the league, his completion percentage is under 50% for the season, he's passed for 300 yards a grand total of 1 time (edit: twice actually, he did it once last year) and you think in a few years he's going to be an elite quarterback?  If that's the case no wonder his ego is big because he's made you do a complete 180 on him in just a few months
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

I don't think he WILL, unless he can check the ego and work on his weak areas. The POTENTIAL has always been there, it's his personality that will hold him back. College fans did him NO favors.

I don't get the impression that Tebow has an ego at all.  I just think he plays hard, and he obviously has great leadership qualities. Relatively good kid that plays hards != ego

But...

He's done...never really arrived.  Belichick just closed the brief Tebow chapter in the NFL.  You can't coach him up; he's too easy to defend, and he's a great example of "heart" not being enough...it's laughable that you would put him in the same league as Brady, Rodgers, and Brees...

thank god it's over...

It sucks the Saints lost in a heartbreaker, but I can respect SF.  Their defense seems is the real thing, and I really like Harbaugh.  I just hope they take the Packers out.  SOOOO many bandwagon fans in the NFL.  It seems worse than any other pro league...

I'm not PUTTING him in the same leauge as those guys, in fact I have a serious problem with people that do. I'm saying that in a few years, if he can check the bs and overcome the weak spots, because he has the potential, he will end up among those players.

I care about Tim Tebow about as much as I care about Joe Flacco.

I give a lot of credit to John Fox and the coaches for making the playoffs and beating the Steelers, but otherwise I don't care much about the Broncos. They'll be next year's version of the Seahawks.

Ravens/Texans game was good.  I was impressed with the Texans and I think they'll be back next year.

I didn't watch the Giants/Packers game.  Totally floored that the Pack got beat.

So new predictions:

NE/Bal: NE but I think it will be close.  I was unimpressed with Baltimore today and Brady is on fucking fire.
Giants/SF: SF.  Although I don't know shit about the Giants.  SF has impressed me though.

Superbowl, I'll say NE finally gets back into the swing and wins it all again.

I don't do very well in picking playoff games, but I've seen all the playoffs thus far and I'm saying Giants/NE superbowl. In a close one NE takes it all. They looked the strongest in my opinion. But then again, they probably played against the weakest team.

I'm taking Giants and Ravens in the superbowl. New England played weak team and the ravens are not going to make it easy on them. The 49ers played well last week but the Giants are a team that together has done great things the last few years and i really dont think they can be beat right now.

Giants and Ravens with Giants taking it all.

Tim Tebow's ceiling is to be as good a QB as Randall Cunningham or Donovan McNabb were, and even that I think is a longshot.

My prediction is a close win for the Patriots over the 49ers in the Super Bowl.  Ravens are overrated and suck on the road, and I think the 49ers vs Giants is a toss up but I'll go 49ers simply because of the NFC trend I mentioned in a previous post.

Too bad about the 49ers, that was a sucky way to lose the game.  I do think the Giants make for a more fun matchup against the Pats though.  Going in to today I was rooting for the 49ers but watching Alex Smith in this game I started to change my mind, I'd much rather watch top tier QB's dueling it out in the Super Bowl instead.  After all of this Tebow mania the last few months I don't think I could stand watching another shaky QB in a big game.

I think he has been a shaky QB but who has a solid year this year.  Yesterday's game though he seemed to revert to his old form and I can easily see him playing that poorly or even worse if they had made the Super Bowl.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: charlie on January 23, 2012, 03:09:52 PM
No, Alex Smith is definitely a shaky quarterback. He does what Harbaugh wants him to do pretty well, but he isn't someone who will light it up. Of course, he's not Tebow level crappy, either. I think he's good enough to be a starter, especially in the right offense.

Really, yesterday he played the same way he played against the Saints and the same way he has played all season and for most of his career. There were about 2 and a half quarters against the Saints where the 49ers offense did absolutely nothing, too.

They lost yesterday because they lost the turnover battle that they usually win (they dropped two interceptions and had an overeager backup up punt/kick returner) and they didn't win the field position game they usually win (mostly because of the turnovers but also because their punter didn't do quite as well as usual). The defense and running game was actually better than usual, and Smith was average for him (the big plays to Davis made up for the rest of the stinkiness). Add it up and the Giants are going to the Super Bowl. :|

I don't honestly care, but I'm going with NY to win. Betting against Tom and crew is probably a bad idea on any day, but I don't think they "want it" like most other teams. It's almost routine for them to be here. Though you could argue over the last few years that they do want it, you don't see the celebration from them like you do with NY. I mean did you see them bouncing and dancing like a bunch of retards after the win last night?

The Pats haven't been to the Super Bowl in 4 years and only have 5 starters who played in that game.  Brady, Welker, a couple offensive linesmen and Vince Wilfork, the 320+ pound tackle on Defense.

the patriots defense has sucked the big one all year and the team has relied on offense to simply put more points on the board than they allow against them.  If Eli has a good day and Brady has a bad day, then the Giants could easily walk all over the Pats.

But, I'm hoping for and still predicting a big Patriots win.

Hey Charlie, you could probably get Tebow pretty cheap now if you want him.  Wish no ill will towards Tebow, and if he had stayed with us I would have rooted for him, but this is by far the better scenario for the Broncos.

I agree. It's a win-win for Denver. Get out from under Tebow, and get Manning to boot. Even if Manning gets sacked in the preseason and breaks his neck, the Broncos still come out ahead because they don't have the headache that is Timothy.

Personally I'd be afraid to take manning.  The upside is that if all goes well, he gets back to himself.  The downside is that he's a risk and a risk that could disappear in an instant.

That being said, it sounds like the docs have cleared him.... so who knows.

I'm sure the contract is going to have all sorts of language in it covering his injury, so worst case scenario they don't have a quarterback.  They made the AFC Title Game without one last year, so they should be ok.

Sure he is a risk, but FAR FAR less of a risk then trying to make Tebow our starting QB.

*bump, 7 years later*
I say Patriots narrowly beat the chargers tomorrow but get creamed by kansas city in the afc championship next week.
for the nfc, i don't follow them much, but probably new orleans over the eagles tomorrow and again over the rams the following week.

So a saints vs chiefs superbowl?

of course, these are wild speculations because I suck at making predictions.  And GO PATS!

Don't worry, you are all going to lose to the Clydesdales!

Hmm, seriously, maybe the Washington Redskins should change their names to Clydesdales.  Those horses are awesome and it doesn't carry any of the racial baggage of their current name.

I correctly predicted the wins of the Chiefs and Rams yesterday so I'm going to say Chargers and Saints today.

I suspect it will be a Saints/Chiefs superbowl with the Saints pulling out a close one.

I'm going to say Chargers

...going into the 4th quarter that's looking less likely.

I didn't post this earlier but here were my guesses for this past weekend's games:
Quote
Colts -Chiefs: The Colts have been playing well but the Chiefs are just too good. They should be able to take this handily. Final Score prediction - KC 31 - IND 13.

Cowboys-Rams: I feel like the Rams should be able to take this, not necessarily with their fancy passing attack but just by running the ball down the Cowboys' throats. Final Score prediction - LAR 30 - DAL 22.

Chargers-Patriots: For awhile there I thought the Chargers would have a good chance of upsetting the Patriots but then I remembered this is the Patriots coming off a bye week and they own Rivers and the Chargers. I'm going the other way and predicting a blowout. Final Score prediction - NE 41 - LAC 27.

Eagles-Saints: This is the toughest one to predict. Feel like it could come down to a big play or turnover at the end. I'm leaning Saints due to home field and the Brees-Thomas combo. Final Score prediction - NO 20 - PHI 14.

Looks like I did pretty good but I was off a bit on that Patriots score prediction.

I expected the Patriots and Saints to get out to early leads but I knew both games would be close and probably go to OT. I was just thinking a couple days ago that if the Patriots won the toss in overtime they would be able to score a TD and end it. In the Rams/Saints game I predicted a strip-sack of Brees would lead to the Rams' game-winning field goal in overtime so I was off there.

Now I have to figure out how to watch the Super Bowl. I don't have cable anymore, and I've been watching the 49ers and parts of the playoff games on my phone (you can watch free if you have Verizon). But the Super Bowl isn't included so I'm gonna have to figure something out. It will also be my anniversary weekend so it's not like we can just go visit families with nice TVs for the weekend.

do you have a tv?  any old-school UHF antenna plugged into it should get you crystal clear HD local channels.  Game is on CBS.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: charlie on January 21, 2019, 05:24:51 PM
I have a TV. I bought one of the fancier modern antennas that go on the window but got nothing. Not sure if it's because I didn't do it right or because we have a large hill and forest directly between us and where all the TV stations broadcast from. It's probably worth it for me to try again, though.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: micah on January 21, 2019, 05:33:56 PM
I'd say try again.

There are several websites, like this one: https://www.antennasdirect.com/transmitter-locator.html where you can see how close you are to which stations.  Generally speaking, if you're within 20-25 miles, you should be good with a set-top antenna as long as you don't have a large hill and a forest between you and the TV stations.

Also, once its hooked up, make sure you go through your TV settings and have it scan for signals.  Its not like the olden days where if the signal goes through the wire the station just starts coming in.  Every single time you adjust the antenna, you have to run a scan again (which is a huge pain in the ass if your TV has a crappy UI like mine)

Post by: ober on January 21, 2019, 09:32:40 PM
I tried one of those antennas.  Worked great for most stations EXCEPT CBS which is what carries the Steelers games around here.

Another option is to do a 7 day trial of Hulu w/ TV.  Then just cancel it.  That's what I have and it's great!

Also fuck the Pats.

I wanted the Saints to win it all.  I guess I'll be rooting for the Rams now.

is CBS on Hulu? I know their stingy about streaming anything via services other then their pricey Watch app.

I had CBS watch for a couple months... when our netflix expired we went a couple months without it and I used some of my google play credits for the CBS app so I could finishing binge watching NCIS, Bluebloods and the first season of the new Star Trek series.

presuming they have the SuperBowl on CBS Watch, I imagine you could sign up for their free week as well and then cancel.

Yes, CBS is on Hulu.  I also paid like $6/month for CBS specifically until I settled on Hulu.

Funny, Micah, your post sounds exactly like the weekend I spent trying to get it to work and learning all the new shit. ;) Probably something I was doing wrong, but that is exactly what I tried.

I'm thinking the Hulu trial or similar might be a good solution.

Then again I just found out we are in fact visiting family that weekend so I guess it's all moot until the next must-see event on TV.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: charlie on February 02, 2019, 01:44:16 PM
The game is getting closer.

We are not going to visit family after all. So that plan is out the window.

My wife and kids will be busy for most of the game so watching it at a restaurant or something won't work.

I don't really have local friends that I'd enjoy watching the game with, so no go there.

I did find out I can in fact watch the game on my phone. Woot?

I don't feel like getting out my other TV to re-test my antenna.

Leaning towards Hulu trial. Maybe we'll do it for a month and watch the Oscars too. My kids want to see season three of The Good Place so if that's available that might seal the deal.

Isn't CBS streaming it for free this year? I didn't look into it cause I don't live in the US so it wouldn't work for me anyway, but I thought I saw that scroll by in a headline.
Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: charlie on February 02, 2019, 09:56:34 PM
Well shit.

It might be one of those things where you need to have a service provider to get the free stream. But I didn't see that when I just searched.

Oh well, I got the Hulu free trial so that'll work. We're three episodes into Killing Eve and will do a Good Place binge all week.

Yeah, I wasn't even sure I wanted to watch the game since I figured it would be a low scoring affair and I didn't trust the Rams to make enough plays down the stretch to have a chance at the end.

On the bright side, I'm enjoying watching TV again.

I missed half the game because i'm sick and kept falling asleep. Plus, every time I woke up, no one had scored so I wasn't sure how much time had passed. I definitely missed all of half time, but I hear that I didn't miss much.
