When a band that i like brings out a new album i expect them not to change their overall style. Most bands do...the most notable being St Anger by Metallica, turning me off them forever.
Now, i got the new System of a Down album and they didnt change their style with this new album ("Mezmerize") that much in my opinon, the biggest change being the more involvment of the guitarist in the vocals. And I like this album, as i like their previous albums.
HERES THE DISCOVERY
I was playing it and i said to my sister (20yrs old, listens to all the gay MTV stuff, despite being a very musically educated person) "hey check it out, its the new system album" to which she replied "meh it sounds the same as all their other stuff".
Eurika! She didnt like it for the reason that i DID like it: became it was the same as their previous albums! So thats why these bands (Metallica, Slipknot, Korn) bring out albums that are away from their original style: because mainstream listeners LIKE IT WHEN THEY DO IT!!

If that's true, explain Aerosmith, AC/DC, and top 40 music for the last 20 years or so.

what about Aerosmith, AC/DC, and top 40 music for the last 20 years?
-
They all have sounded exactly the same, yet have all been very popular.
-
im talking about today's teens, grandpa
also lots of people (many of which i know) listen to bands like them just for the cool factor

Quite a departure from when I was a teenager.
-
i mean they're all like "look at me i like AC/DC im so cool...whats the name of a song i like of theirs? Um...i dont really remember the names...i just uhhhh..."
-
I love System of a Down even though their polictical view is much different from mine.
And hey I can't remember a song to save my ass so fuck ya ;)

That's not fair. AC/DC not only has the same style in every song; every song is exactly the same. Scientific fact. Also, Aerosmith has been a wuss band for years now. C'mon, they did "Don't wanna miss a thing", for chrissakes!

Yeah but you do genuinly like them...you dont just pretend to. You dont buy all their merchandise just because you want people to think you're 'rock'
-
My favorite AC/DC quote:
When asked once if the band had just made ten albums that all sounded the same, Angus responded "That's bullshit. We have made eleven albums that sound the same."

You mean "everybody's fucked" and "war is bad"?
bands can't have the same music all the time. that's like saying that once you're 25, you're pretty much the same for the next 20 years. everybody grows. if you had to listen to system of a down constantly for 5 years (by playing it), wouldn't you want to change your style a bit for variety?
-
>> wouldn't you want to change your style a bit for variety?
well its not as if i just listen to one or two bands excusively
-
i meant to say that if you were a band member, wouldn't you get sick of hearing youself play the same thing after a while
-
nope

When I was your age (here comes the grandpa speech) I used to be a Metallica fan...then they released the single "Turn The Page". And I hated the song; I wouldn't even give it a chance. Now I think it's perhaps one of their best songs.
Sure, AC/DC haven't changed all that much, but they're using a timeless template for their music - blues and hard rock. The stuff's never gonna grow old; it'll always be popular. A band like Korn is only going to have a limited shelf life because they're very much of their time - much like so many "hippie" bands of the late 60's, glam and disco groups of the 70's and cock rockers of the 80's.
Nu-metal is a genre that has pretty much exhausted itself in the public eye. SOAD are one of the few bands that survived that period because they were never strictly speaking of that genre - to me they are more of a modern metal band that have changed their style just enough on each album, just as Pearl Jam have survived because they had nothing in common with Nirvana even though they were both lumped in together as "grunge" bands. Heck, even Nirvana changed their style by the end.

I wish I would have saved the page from flashdaddee where you said St Anger was really growing on you :)
