Chrome Users (I'm lazy)
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:38:23 AM »
I like most things about Chrome; however, there is something that really bothers me.  I'm hoping it can be changed in a setting buried in the configuration...

When typing a search term in the address bar, the default behavior seems to be "accept the current suggestion when user hits enter".  I hate this.  I would like for it to accept whatever I have typed into the address bar as the search term.  If i indicate that i like the suggestion better, then it should Google the suggestion.  I.E. if I hit the TAB key or select a suggestion from the drop-down menu and hit return.

When I type in the bar the action is to Google search what I have typed. (See screenshot)

Do you have the "Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing" enabled?  When I enabled it I noticed that it does something similar to what you are describing.  I personally don't have it enabled.

I don't have that enabled.

Here's a screenshot.  I've typed sqlite-j into the search bar.  If I hit enter, I get google results for sqlite-jdbc. boooo

It annoys the shit out of me too, my solution is to type what i'm looking for then hit the space bar right before hitting enter.

It comes in handy a lot, so I just deal with it.

It worked properly for me. I typed sqlite-j and the first one on the list was to google search for "sqlite-j" and the second one was "sqlite-jdbc". It selected the first when I hit enter.

I couldn't find any settings to make it so, though.

None of my boxes do what you guys are describing without the instant option enabled.  I do have my boxes sync'd so it is likely that they all have the same settings.

Exception:  If I've already searched for the term before it does put it as a suggestion.  So perhaps you are just annoyed it is suggesting things you've already searched for?

Mine only does it for previously searched items. It comes in handy for webdesign when you need to fly through url calls for a few different domains, but it's annoying as shit if you want to search for the same thing, but slightly different.

For example if i search for "frozen dog toys" but then I search for "frozen dog" the browser automatically adds the "toys" as a previously used item and i have to hit space to make it "frozen dog".

In Preferences, in "under the hood" there is a check box with the following:

Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar

I unchecked it and nothing changed, but i did not restart chrome because im working on stuff. Try that with a chrome restart.

BOO! The new chrome doesn't have the "speedial" page in new tabs.

And it's highlighting every single word I type as misspelled. WTF

speedial page is to the left of the apps page, look for the arrows at the edge. not sure about your spelling problems.

I do dislike what they did with the recently closed list.  I tended to use that why too much.
