Visio, but not
« on: April 18, 2005, 09:55:28 AM »
Does anyone know of any free utilities out there that can open, edit, and save Visio files?

Have you looked at openoffice to see if they have a program?

It doesn't sound like it.  Everywhere I've looked said vsd's would be a nightmare to reverse engineer.  I guess it's a totally closed file structure.

I did find a program that can save as or export as a vsd file, but it costs a lot of money.

Still, that makes me think there may be some way around this.

Well, now I've got Visio installed, so this isn't really a problem.  I'm curious, though - what alternatives are there (besides just pirating Visio)

KDE has a similar program (Kivio) which after a quick look appears to have a multi platform version of it for relatively cheap. Doesn't do Visio imports but from the looks of it is otherwise a pretty good replacement.
There's DIA too but again that doesn't do Visio import/export. I haven't been very impressed with it the few times I've tried to use it.
OpenOffice has Draw that can do Visio type stuff but once again can't do Visio files.

I personally use OpenOffice since it's cross platform and I've gotten quite used to it.
