Phone line?
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:01:17 PM »
So we did a bunch of work in the basement this weekend, paint, molding, ripped out a crappy stair rail, painted the steps... and the one thing that is still exposed in the kids play area is the thing in the following picture.  The fuse box is directly above this but I'm not as worried about that.  It's too high for them to open and kind of hard for them to do anyways.  And I'll probably cover the GFI somehow but I'm wondering about the thing under the GFI.  Is that a phone line?  I mean I think it is a phone line, but what is gold box??

how old is your house? I don't think this is phone related...I think this is a gfci external breaker.

The house was only built in 1998.  And jkim, I told my wife it might be related to the doorbell (she looked at me like I was crazy) but why the fuck would it be down there?  And more importantly, why is it attached to the GFI electrical box?  Maybe I don't understand how doorbells work?

I can see a doorbell being attached to a GFI for much the same reason the electrical outlets near the sink are GFI.

Honestly, I'd find an electrician to take a look and tell you for sure.  What I will say is that it looks like a fucking hack job and should probably be replaced.

truthfully, that was my first thought as well...but the placement made me think otherwise.

Its for the doorbell. Its there because it is near the box but not actually in it. It is bad practice to put a transformer in a breaker box but it needs to be close by so you can locate it.
hey ethic if you and i were both courting lily allen..... oh wait, which one of us has a relationship that lasted more than the bus ride home?

Alright, thanks.  That sucks.  I was hoping to move it above the breaker box but I guess that's not going to work.
