I was just thinking about a good fast USB 2.0 key - maybe something fast enough to meet the standards for Vista ReadyBoost (is that the name of their Flash drive = more ram thing?).

I'd think something like that would be plenty fast enought to record live.  You could save some money by getting one that's physically larger since you don't have to move it around.

USB will be too slow for streaming audio. You'll need IDE (essentially a solid state hard drive).

After pricing out a few options I think it's still cheaper just to build an enclosure that reduces the noise. I just have to get some better ventilation so it doesn't catch fire but there are plenty of quiet fans that can do the job and a couple baffles later we're all set.
If I get concerned about space then I might go to SSD or something (and when they come down in price).

Would something a lot smaller than 77 gigs be enough if you copied over to a traditional HD after you were done recording?  I'd think something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208064

I don't know, I'm just throwing around ideas
