Having recently gotten into a band called The Mint Chicks, I decided to back track through some of their influences, one main influence being the Buzzcocks.  And holy shit I can't stop listening to them.  Very Who-ish and pretty typical of the English punk sound of the late 70's, but catchy as hell and some great songwriting to be found.

Recommended tracks: I Don't Mind, Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've?), I Believe, Sixteen Again.

Probably Pete, but Paddy is a great bass player.

Yep. The Buzzcocks rool! The only unfortunate thing is that I can remember the singles coming out. Pete was a very innovative rhythm guitarist for the time.

another overlooked british punk band in the 70s (and much later) was wire.

Yeah I've heard of Wire - only heard 12XU.  Great song.  Damn, too many great bands!

I also recommend Gang of Four, and their album "Entertainment!" - more punk/funk, but so many bands have copped their sound, i.e. Franz Ferdinand, The Others, RHCP (in fact I think their first album was produced by Andy Gill, GoF's guitarist), even REM borrowed bits from them.  They still sound very fresh production-wise, and have in fact recently reformed (here's hoping for a new album) :).

XTC (great, great band. Quintessentially English pop)
The Ruts
The Adverts
ATV (Action Time and Vision was a great pop track - some of the other stuff was pretty weird)

Public Image Ltd. is another that springs to mind, though they were more post-punk.

pretty much all of the songs on wire's album "pink flag" are awesome. 12xu is the heaviest, but a bunch of others on that album (the ones that last more than 30 seconds) are good in their own right. listen to 'reuters', 'champs' or 'mannequin' if you get the chance. their later albums are more experimental i hear, and get into electronic music a bit.

gang of four is pretty good, although i haven't listened to them enough to have an informed opinion (although they're catchy, which is what really matters i guess)
