Ober to Upgrade?
« on: December 19, 2008, 10:07:48 AM »
Are you considering a PC upgrade?

It has to be the cheapest time in history to do so, if you consider bang for the buck.
CPU               $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115132

Mobo             $114 (MIR = $15) = $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359

Video            $115 (MIR = $20) = $95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130397

Memory 4GB           $40 (MIR = $20) = $20
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227199

HDD               $65
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148288

PS                 $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171023

DVD               $24
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151179

Case              $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137

Total                      $583 + $25 for shipping.

All said and done about $600.

Selling your old one for $200 to $300 should be easy.  I sold mine for $300 here at work!  Now you are down to $300 to $400.

Or you can use your current DVD, Case, and HDD knocking off $170 for a total of around $400.

I can get you Vista Ultimate 64 and Office 2007 of you want them.

I guess if I were to sell my existing computer, I'd need to buy all new stuff so I wouldn't be able re-use almost anything.

My problem is justifying it.  It would mainly be for gaming and I game maybe 5 hours a week right now if that.  I have Office 2007 but would need Vista because it would be pointless to upgrade and stick with XP.

It's tempting... and I could probably even sell the wife on it.  Hell, for those prices, that's a weekend coding job, plus I just got a raise at work and we paid off one of the cars.

GAHHHH... decisions.  :(

You people and newegg. Stop over paying, watch the sales, love the free shipping, admire the quality and support:

Tigerdirect.com

I like newegg over tiger direct... I like the site, I like the information, and they're consistent.  I also think they have more stuff and better deals.

I use newegg when I want a dirt cheap case because they do tend to expand more over td product wise, but imo that's because ts weeds out the junk.

Consistency? I see way more in TD then newegg. I have always used both (since around 01 or 02) and used to favor newegg. Like I said in michas ram thread I won't even buy ram from newegg anymore.

Prices almost always favor tigerdirect. Especially since you don't pay for shipping with TD and its always 2 day.

Obes you two should always have an reasonably up to date PC in the house.  Not only for gaming either.  Also be sure to do it while your current PC is still worth a few hundred to the right person.  You have a very nice PC and it is worth the $200 to $300 for anyone you would sell it to.

I think it well worth it to both you and Samantha.

Yes RoD.  I agree that Obes could probably chop off another 10% to maybe even 20% in some cases if he watched shipping charges carefully by using multiple source shopping.

I was just attempting to show that for around $600 minus whatever he sells his current rig for, he and Sam would have a brand new rig for around $400.  The new rig would be completely up to date, years more durable, with the latest 64 bit OS, and capable of any gaming, home-work, or daily uses required for another several years.

Finally, I again have to mention, that this is a historical high in bang for your buck in home computing.

Multi source? Td is one source. Two at most if you use td and newegg. Only change there is the td stuff will show up first :p

As for the old pc I always just listed them at 250.00 local CL and if it didn't sell for 200-250 partout on ebay

Ok, so let's say I do this... I think there are one or two other things I'll need: CPU cooler... we all know the standard ones suck.  Is that good memory?  CPU... is that decent?  Obviously if you're pointing it out, it's pretty good.  I've never heard of Cooler Master... new brand?

I want to do it and honestly I can write it off as a business expense, but I want to make sure I'm doing this right.  I mean, let's be honest, my desktop isn't exactly a slacker.  It does well for itself for being 3 years old.  Hell, if anything, I should probably buy my wife a new laptop... but I think I'm going to do this anyways.

And I did look at some of this stuff on TD and it's not cheaper there.

Any other thoughts??  This shit always makes me nervous.

Cooler master has been around since the release of the amd k7 series. They are made by antec and are very reliable, but I stick with thermaltake and artic silver for my cpu's.

My PC appears to be over 6 years old.

I don't generally build my own machine. I've upgraded RAM once and changed out a hard drive once.

I don't want to spend $600. But if I did, should I do this, too?
