Web hosting (again)
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:08:10 PM »
Ok, we haven't had a web hosting thread for at least a month now....

I've never actually bought my own hosting, I've always just used a friends or school account. Now I want to get my own. I'm looking at godaddy because they are cheap and support both python and java. ~$8 / month, 150GB storage, unlimited bandwidth, etc...

My question is, if I upload some really data/cpu intensive app (like a research prototype search engine, maybe 10GB of data, it would consume up to 6 - 8GB of RAM if available) would they cut me off? I don't see anything against it, but its shared hosting so I dunno how that would work...

I don't care so much about the perfomance, since this is more just for demos and personal stuff.

Also, I'm open to hosting suggestions that support python and java.

You might want to look at using amazon ec2. Their new micro instance is pretty close to what I think you'd get from shared hosting. You'd have to pay for storage and bandwidth but you'd also have full control over the machine.

I'm pondering dropping Host Gator for it.

Yeah, I think ec2 would be overkill for my needs. Im still leaning towards godaddy. I remember some people having strong opinions about godaddy and 1and1, I don't remember if it was love or hate (I think it switched back and forth from time to time).

That was RoD, I believe. And since he's disappeared I say, go with GoDaddy.

I hope you're joking.  I fucking hate godaddy.  Awful support, awful interface, and I think they overload their shared servers.

I use these guys: http://www.ace-host.net/shared-hosting/

I don't know if they support Java/Python, so that might be a drawback.  However, I don't think you're going to find a shared hosting account that is going to let you consume 6-8GB of ram on a shared server without raising concerns.  I'd be pissed if I was sharing a server with you.
