www.pagename or just pagename?
« on: May 06, 2005, 03:44:03 PM »
Maybe this question is not appropriate for this forum but I didn't know where else to post.
Anyway I'd like to know why some web pages can be opened by typing both
http://www.name.domain
and
http://name.domain

for example google can be opened in IE by typing  in address field:

http://www.google.com
and
google.com

Why others cannot be opened that way?

for example:
Cprogramming forum can be opened by typing:
cboard.cprogramming.com
but not http://www.cboard.cprogramming.

Can someone explain me why?

Cheers

cboard is a subdomain off of cprogramming.com

www isn't a subdomain but something else that escapes me atm (I'm thinking zone?)

Most webhosts point the default zone to the www zone

here's a little movement going on - basically they want you to have your www.x.y redirect to x.y: http://no-www.org/

Why is .www deprecated?

In order to answer this question, we must first recall the definition of WWW:

    World Wide Web:
    n. Abbr. WWW
    1) The complete set of documents residing on all Internet servers that use the HTTP protocol, accessible to users via a simple point-and-click system.
    2) n : a collection of internet sites that offer text and graphics and sound and animation resources through the hypertext transfer protocol.

By default, all popular Web browsers assume the HTTP protocol. In doing so, the software prepends the 'http://' onto the requested URL and automatically connect to the HTTP server on port 80. Why then do many servers require their websites to communicate through the www subdomain? Mail servers do not require you to send emails to recipient@mail.domain.com. Likewise, web servers should allow access to their pages though the main domain unless a particular subdomain is required.

Succinctly, use of the www subdomain is redundant and time consuming to communicate. The internet, media, and society are all better off without it.

Using the links at the top of the page, you may view recently validated domains as well as submit domains for real-time validation.

'www' is no different from any other subdomain. It's just... more standard.

depends on how the zones are set. For example, when i ran wacker7 i made an entry for wacker7.com and http://www.wacker7.com. some hosts/dns setups are automatic for this, i specify'd mine when i used zoneedit.com
hey ethic if you and i were both courting lily allen..... oh wait, which one of us has a relationship that lasted more than the bus ride home?

right because http://www.topcites.com is their domain, and they made a subdomain like i did which is hissite.topcities.com. technically http://www.name.topcites.com doesnt exist because name is a subdomain, typing it as the http://www.name version makes the browser look for that domain, and its an illegal format.

I'll have to look but I could have sworn most domains don't have a seperate www DNS entry like subdomains have.

My domain has one.

Perhaps the hosting company/registrar hides the option to point www.domain.com to a different IP than domain.com?

EDIT: BUG: I cannot remove the hyperlink, even though I click the button 'Remove link'. No big deal, but still.

How is that format illegal? For example www.forums.entropysink.com is a valid (and working) DNS name. If you own a domain name, you can have nested subdomains.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you.

i mean for them its an illegal format based on the way they handle subdomains. Not in general.
