Chrome: why should I like it
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:10:38 AM »
I want to like Chrome, I really do.  But I have a lot of tools in Firefox that I use and enjoy.  Someone convince me to switch.

I would need the following abilities in Chrome to switch:

1) Something comparable to the Web Developer Toolbar in FF
2) Colorzilla
3) Adblock Plus
4) Bookmark sync (I'm pretty sure Chrome does this)
5) Ability to create and run 'macros'... I currently use a plugin called iMacros in Firefox
?

I'm sure there are others.

i've been using Chrome now nearly exclusively at work for about a month now and at home ever since I got my new computer ( I didn't even install FF on it)

There is a Web Developer Extension you can install (chrome doesn't have toolbars) -- it works just like the toolbar in FF (with a cleaner interface) but also has a couple limitations (like apparently no hotkeys, such as  Ctrl+Shft+S to disable CSS).  A few other features are missing too - like "view generated source" BUT they can be found through Chrome's very nice firebug-like "Tools > Developer Tools" window which is really helpful and comes standard.

Speaking off firebug, there is a firebug "lite" extension too but I haven't installed it because, again, the Developers Tools window is super powerful.

I'm not sure if there are comparable extensions for your other listed plugins, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are. I've had good luck adding extensions.  One of my favorites is Google's "Personal Block List" that lets you weed out spam-farms that show up in your search results. You can block sites like devcomments from showing up!

The reason I've been running it at work is because for somereason FF was crashing on a daily basis (on my <1 yr old macbook pro)  mostly because I had a dozen tabs open and run Pandora.  No problems in Chrome yet.

Oh, and it "feels" snappier.   At least, for javascript heavy sites like gmail and facebook.

You click the little star and tell it where to put it.  There are two locations: The bar or the bookmarks folder.  Both locations can contain folders of their own.

Tried it a few months ago, still on it.  A bit cleaner and snappier.  Sandboxing it great.  I'm sure you can handle those macros at this point...

How about an Undo Last Closed Tab extension?
Ctrl-shift-t or Create a new tab, look at the list of recently closed tabs and select the one you want to reopen.

An environment where certain things are off limits. Code is often sand-boxed to try and minimise any malicious intent - for example stopping web-scripts touching the file system, etc...
