is 33 year old Whisky ok to drink?
« on: November 19, 2008, 10:12:23 PM »
I was over at my mother-in-laws house tonight and my wife was joking about all the old, unopened bottles of liquor they have in the closets - most of which were received as gifts over the decades.

anyway, I brought home an unopened bottle of "6-year-old" Seagrams v.o. with an import excise bottling sticker dated 1981 (exactly like this one i just found on ebay)

anyway, the bottle was sealed so I opened it and took a swig. I didn't go blind or anything and it tasted fine... is it ok to drink the rest of it (in moderation over time) or ....   :dunno:

DRINK!

Had some 24 yr old Crown earlier this year...friend's GF stole it from her sober holder brother - her dad bought it when he was born and dad took one shot from it then...It was quite good.
govtcheez03:  i kind of look for it - i seek out stupidity and annoy it until it either gets better, gets banned, or goes away on its own

I think basically as long as there is no air contamination, spirits last for a lifetime and then some.  If you decant it now it will probably lose some of it's alcohol content.  You might get away with pouring it into a smaller bottle if you can't manage to finish it all.  Still, now you've opened it you're duty bound to finish it.  In a responsible manner of course

the only one's you really have to worry about is wine.  think it'll eventually turn into vinegar - or something like that.

Depends on the wine. Some can only be aged so long

Once u open any alcohol the clock starts ticking. Well sort of good wine is done with a cork plug to allow it to breath

so now that i've opened it do I need to drink it any faster then I would a newer bottle? I already have a couple of bottles of opened whiskey in my cabinet - it usually takes me a year to drink a whole bottle (because I have multiple bottles to choose from)

no. Whiskey is good for a pretty long time after it has been opened - probably around a year or so. You can prolong this by purchasing this divice that pumps air out of the bottle before closing it.
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
