Title: I love you, grill
Post by: Govtcheez on April 03, 2010, 01:38:22 PM
Finally got a new grill.  Can't wait to toss some brats on it this afternoon before the MSU game

What kind of grills does ES have?  This is my new one (upgraded from a functional but old and grody Coleman tailgater one that we will keep around for camping and... tailgating.

Gas.

Heavy duty seasoned cast iron grated.  Huge surface area.  Comes up to temp (580) in about 6 minutes.

I really want to love ribeye and I get that steak gets its flavor from the fat, but man, it seems like every time I get one at a restaurant or from a butcher (a good one, even), it's just fatty as hell.

It's been raining off and on this afternoon.  I've grilled in the rain before and I'll do it again, by gum!

Simple Weber grill. I haven't used it in a year or two. :|

But I have grilled hamburgers on Christmas the last two years in the dark in my dad's backyard.

Update: It's still pretty windy, but it stopped raining.  The wind is making is a little difficult to get the charcoal to stay lit.  On the plus side, i smell delicious.

edit: I re-lit the charcoal, it's going, brats are on.  It looks like I'm about to get really wet.

Where?

Downtown mostly. I was doing contracted transporting of inmates between jails. I have seen way more of 120 west michigan ave then i ever needed too lol. Speaking of which wtf is up with that circle at south washington and west michigan? Seems like a shitty design for inner city imo

I'm lazy and tired. Barbecue takes time and effort. It's hard enough for me to make hot dogs in a pan on the stove. :|

we have a medium duty charbroil gas grill - I can't find a similar model, so I will not post. But when it was purchased about 4  years ago by my dad it was around $400. Full stainless steal and I love it. Not a single rust spot. We grill all year long. In the fall the grill goes in the second garage and comes out once every two weeks (or more). Even if weather is bad, there is a little overhang roof that comes out about 5 feet.

Also have a very simple charcoal weber grill. That we use only when we have lots of people over and need two grills. Everything tastes better from a charcoal grill but it just such a long process that I don't always have time for.

In the summer we grill a leas once a week.

I have two grilling favorites: polish sausage and salmon.

BTW, once the charbroil is not usable I soooooo want to get a weber gas grill. But those suckers are expensive, but they burn and heat so evenly. The only gripe I have about the charbroil is it takes about 12-15 minutes to get to 600 degrees. My friends weber takes about 5. The charbroil burns more quickly in the front than the back also....but  got used to these quirks and use them to my advantage

Not mine exactly, but pretty close: http://www.homedepot.com/Outdoors-Grills-Accessories-Grills-Grills-Propane/Char-Broil/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xjvZaq2lZch/R-100507584/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Haven't fired it up this year yet, but that time is coming very shortly.  I grill in the rain, but I throw the outdoor umbrella over it... the only that came with the table we have.  Works well :)

And no, I'm not hardcore enough to grill in the winter.

Things I've grilled:

Veggies of all kinds
corn on the cob
steaks
burgers
hot dogs
full chickens
brats
chicken breasts
BBQ chicken

We do a lot of kabobs.  Great stuff, but you have to be careful you don't burn them... maybe someone has tips for that?

I need to get more adventurous with marinades... that's one thing I haven't really done much of.

Charcoal is too much work.  No doubt at all.

That said it isn't really grilling unless you are using charcoal (or something similar).

These are essentially two separate ways of cooking food where the similarities end at outdoors cooking with heat.

With my new grill, I pile the charcoal in, turn the gas on for about 10 minutes, wait about 15 more, and then I start cooking.  It definitely took longer than gas but it tasted better and it wasn't very much work at all.  I don't know what y'all are talking about with "too much work"
Title: Re: I love you, grill

too much work == lack of patience

people who don't mind putting in the time for great food will always use coals

You have to keep buying charcoal, deal with the mess, figure out a way to manage the ashes, etc, etc.  I just swap out tanks.  And a propane tank will last me a large chunk of the summer... and that's like.. $25?

The charcoal goes into a little bowl and every once in awhile I just dump it into a trashbag.

I got some ribeyes from Sams today...they were about an inch and a quarter thick. There was some fat, but it really did not bother me. Olive oil and lemon pepper and marinade in Worcestershire for about 5 hours. 7 minutes on one side, 5 on the other - mmmmmm good. Plus bake potatoes and my wife made an awesome chopped salad. Good times.

Yesterday was a little cloudy and there was some rain. Still i had some friends over for some bbq

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Brinkmann-4-Burner-Gas-Grill-Stainless-Steel/13437088

It's gas, it heats pretty well, and the meat taste real good. Even my charcoal loving friend was impressed by the taste.

This grill is pretty cheap and it works really well.

My friend Jimmy has the same grill, no complaints and it does do a pretty good job.
