Electric bass. Anyone here play it?
Just want some recommendations on what to look for - nothing fancy, just a good robust 4-string. Got to learn to play it first ;)

It depends what you want to play...rock, funk...
Fender always make good solid basses (Jazz or Precision). Or you could go with a Ricky, like the one in your sig, but you'll need a spare £1000 to do so.

Yamaha make some decent bass guitars too.

A 250W amp could blow your roof off! Bass Amp pack a lot more punch than thier equivilent guitar amps.
If you arent playing live, a 30 watt amp is more than sufficient. You can pick up a marshall in this range for a little over £100

Cool. I know this semi-formed band (no name yet) and their looking for a drummer, and have recently signed up a bassist. BUT, the bassist, whom I'm pretty friendly with, isn't friendly with the rest of the band. To add another spice this guy is going to get me started playing bass, like a semi-tutor. Now, I'd feel pretty guilty if the band (also close friends of mine) chose me as their bassist over the other guy purely on the grounds of friendship.
So yeah, there's a possibility I'll be playing live.

No, I mean if at the end of the day they ask me instead of the other guy. The band I'm talking about have tried to get off the ground like 3 times, so nothing is likely to happen in the long run.

I would form my own band but no absolutely nobody who'd be interested except the band I already know.

Come on, Cheez. You must realize by now that half of the bands out there can't even play their instruments, and they're still famous. Look at, say, Blink-182... Bassist just plays a 3 note progression, same as the 3 power chord progression the guitarist is playing on every song.

I played bass for a while... it was fun, but you'll also have to deal with the stigma that you're the "reatard of the band" - a lot of people think the bassist is just a wannabe guitarist >.<
but yeah, if you wanna hear some good basslines, listen to red hot chili peppers or rancid.

Most 'rock' bands have shitty bass, thats why theres that common belief that bassists suck. To get talented bass, listen to bands such as Mudvayne, where the bass is actually a featured instrument and not just backing
