DVI-D to VGA?
« on: November 02, 2014, 10:43:25 AM »
My 9-5 job was giving away some old monitors.  I snatched one up but it's only VGA.  My current computer doesn't have the old style DVI adapters so none of my basic adapters work.  Is this the only option?  http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-DVI2VGAE-1920x1200-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00C93JQXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1414942801&sr=8-3&keywords=dvi-d+to+vga+adaptor

It seems like I have to go this route but I'm not sure it's worth it to spend $25 to get an old monitor working.  I've been without a second monitor for quite a while and I think I might just stay that way if this is the only route.

I do have a VGA port on my motherboard but I'm not sure if it's possible to use onboard video plus video from my actual video card.  If that was an option (I hooked it up but it doesn't seem to be working or even recognizing the new monitor), I'd go that route too.

Any ideas?

You can't need to get a simple adapter and plug it into the DVI-I connector on your GPU.  You need the analog feeds.

You can usually get them at Walmart.
