Paging KnuckleBuckett - AV Receivers
« on: December 31, 2007, 12:01:30 PM »
I've been rearranging my living room and I'm wanting to add a moderate theater/listening system upstairs. I've been reading over at Audioholics and they seem to really like the Denon receivers. Got any opinions on a bang-for-buck receiver in the $500 range? My brother has a friend that can get good deals from Flanner's (http://www.flanners.com/). The plan for the living room is a simple 2.1 or 3.1 setup (probably 3.1). Once I finish my basement, I'll be making a room into a nice theater.

I like to push Outlaw due to the quality for the cash.  I use their RR2150 daily.  Best receiver I have yet owned.  USB input, powerful amplification, classy look, front panel aux input, and a nice remote.  Also great customer service and help.

Here.  Check it out.
http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/rr2150.html

Outlaw also produces amazing surround processors and amplifiers.  It is hard to beat their bang for the buck.

Denon was known as really nice gear for years.  They switched to overseas manufacturing and sourcing, lost their rep, and became complete crap.  However, in recent years they have been trying to overcome these issues with some degree of success.  I would not be afraid to at least consider them.  I checked out their line of receivers and do not like the fact that they are designed for surround with stereo as an afterthought.  I would suggest purchasing a receiver designed for 2.1 not surround.

I strongly suggest a 2 or 2.1 setup.

Get the Outlaw and a cheap pair of speaks.  As soon as you can afford decent speaks, pick them up.

A great place to get audio in good shape and at reasonable prices (usually 40 to 60% off) is www.Audiogon.com I purchase alot of my equipment from there.  I also sell gear there on occasion.

I have watched for RR2150 units to sell on Audiogon, but they are gone as soon as they are posted.  I have seen maybe five up for sale and I own one of them.  I would like another.

Does this help?

But what about the Video switching? I don't see any video stuff with the Outlaw.

This is true.  Video switching must be done via the remote.

Oh GRRRRR.

So I decided to hook up my old Alesis gear since I don't use it in the studio anymore and watch a couple of movies as I ponder what sort of receiver to get. And wouldn't you know you, by not doing my research I've found that my wonderful Samsung DLP TV has a small video sync issue (due to the video processing it does). It's only a few milliseconds but it's enough to create a nasty echo if I leave the TV sound up. So need some sort of digital delay processor as well (or a unit that has it built in) to compensate for my stupid TV. Damn technology and latency. The bane of recording has now crept into my listening enjoyment. Oh how I miss analog signals and their negligible latencies. Damn you digital age!!!!

I'm going to check and see if my brother's friend can get me any good deals or recommends one of the Sony or Yamaha receivers. Or maybe look for a harman/kardon. I thought I saw a few on that eBay audio website you mentioned knuck.
