2015 North East Blizzard
« on: January 26, 2015, 10:36:44 AM »
** Official thread for me to complain about snow over the next couple days. **

The snowpocalypse is starting!

I almost bumped this 2-year old thread, but thought I'd start a new one.

We're west enough of Boston, and north enough of the shoreline that we probably won't see the super high snow totals or gusty winds but are still in the 18-24" range for snow fall and the wind should still be pretty sucky for a while tomorrow morning.

The Governor has issued travel bans starting tonight and the stores have all sold out of bread.

Interestingly enough, a local TV station that has been naming winter storms for the last several decades has declared this "Bizzard Colbie."  I think its fitting :)

Good luck.  Thankfully that mess isn't making it this far west but I do intend to check in with my parents and my sister.

So far so good.  If it gets ugly I will post.  If we have power and internet.

I had to put on a light jacket for a bit this morning.

I was so cold during my ride yesterday.  It must have been in the low 50s.  Really should have worn the thermal base layer over the chest.

Stay safe guys!

we haven't had a real snow storm in my neck of the woods yet - and I'm really hoping for some!

Yeah, definitely stay safe and all that stuff for those of you getting hit.

Also, my wife was complaining that it was near 80°F at a birthday party in the park my daughter went to yesterday. She wore a sun dress and they had ice cream cake. I mean, I enjoy a good, "hey, you people in the blizzard, I'm cold, too, it was low 50s today," comment as much as the next guy, but WTF. That's pretty crazy.

Also... climate change predicts this. :)

This isn't a total surprise to climatologists. Severe winter weather has received less study by climatologists than other impacts of climate change. But an increasing amount of research has suggested we might expect to experience this pattern in certain climates, mostly because a warmer atmosphere can carry more moisture.

There’s some statistical evidence for this in the Central Park data...

...

Still, climatological data is volatile. What’s the probability that the heavy snowfall totals in New York recently have occurred by chance alone?

I set up a simple simulation to test this. From Jan. 1, 1869, through this past Sunday, 53,350 days elapsed. Of those, 5,502, or about 10 percent, have occurred since Jan. 1, 2000. So in each simulation, I assigned each of the 10 snowiest days a 10 percent chance of having occurred since 2000. In only 0.2 percent of the simulations (out of 1 million trials) did I wind up with at least five of these days having occurred since 2000.

Based on this experiment, in other words, the fact that New York has had so many record-setting snowfalls recently probably isn't just a coincidence or a fluke.

Kind of a bust. Still a good sized winter storm, but so far, hasn't lived up to its hype. Well see how the rest is the day plays out.
