IE Background image problem
« on: August 25, 2008, 05:15:05 PM »
Third time trying to post this...First time it says I can't attach an html file, then the second time it says I already posted it (but I don't see the thread, so hopefully there's no double post)

I wanted to add a little image next to links that go to an external site, but I ran into a problem. As usual, it works fine in Firefox and Opera, but IE does it differently. When the text wraps (due to the size of my sidebar) instead of the image appearing at the same level as the text, it gets covered by the text and is positioned between the lines.

I'll attach an example (the html file is renamed to .txt). Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Make the icon go in front?

Honestly, lately I've been getting really upset with wasting a lot of time trying to get stupid stuff to work in IE. Almost to the point that I don't care if my site doesn't work in IE.

If only I didn't work for "the man" and have to program for corporate drones.

I tried the icon in front, and it looked kinda funny.

Sounds like the only solution is to actually change the markup on the page, which would be a pain since I'm using XSLT 1.0 to generate the markup. (I don't think the server supports XSLT 2.0, or at least I get errors when I try to use those functions server-side)

I think I just won't display the images for IE.

Maybe dashed underline it for IE or something?

I have been having a ton of trouble with IE as well. My solution has been to deploy a configuration for opera and FF as the default, and if IE is detected a seperate design is used.

Dashed underline's a good idea

I use the same CSS file for all browsers, but use conditional comments to overwrite certain styles that don't appear correctly in IE. The only other difference is sending my pages as text/html to IE instead of application/xhtml+xml

I thought you checked these kinds of things when you write SW.  Just wondered.

IMO IE8 is completely irrelevant as a browser.  IE7 hasn't gained widespread usage and IE users are not going to be the ones to update their browser as soon as a new version comes out.

There are three modes that IE8 can render, named, "Quirks," "Strict," and "Standard."

And they're still all going to suck compared to any of the other browsers. I'd say it's time for IE to get with the times before they find themselves behind Firefox.
