Host recommendation
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:39:08 PM »
Anyone know of a host that could fill these need?
- SVN repository with ability to add hook scripts
- Add Apache module
- Cron support executing custom scripts
- Apache conf access for our stuff
- MySQL database
- Large number of subdomains

Now I think that is a little much for a standard shared host so I was thinking dedicated.  However, we don't need a full machine to begin with.  So I was thinking a VPS but I don't know of any good VPS hosts.  In addition, a short term (3-6 month increments) payment would be most ideal.

So any suggestions on a host?

I've been using www.jumpline.com for the last 8 years.

I used to always recommend them wholeheartedly (and provide a link with my affiliate data to make a commission) but I find my sites running a bit slow lately and their customer support taking up to 24 to 48 to reply; even to major problems.  Not to mention their prices have gone up and they've all but droppped their affliate program.

I still use them and they are still a good value...  so check them out to in your comparison.  then let me know who you end up going with; I might switch :-)

I always get a server using centos. It really seems to be the best distro for webservers. My Americas Army server ran on centos as well.

There's almost no reason for any server other then linux. Unless your using something gay like asp and in that case you should suffer with a windows server.

I've been using www.jumpline.com for the last 8 years.

My major beef is that unless you get the year plan there is a setup fee.

Iirc vortech hits you with a setup fee as well. 1and1 either doesn't or waived it for me I can't remember. And support for 1and1 is great. Anytime of day you can get an american. In my case I have a managed dedicated server so I have a direct number and always deal with the same group of guys. Always helpful and very capable

This is my host.  Best CS I've ever found.  The prices aren't the best you'll find but I think the specs make it worth it.

So my annual renewal is up for my main website that I don't really use any more (other then e-mail). I Have a few other sites hosted there for former clients who have a golden handshake of free hosting with me but they are small...

So instead of paying like $240 for another year of VDS hosting, I'm just going to migrate everything over to godaddy's shared servers for $6.99 a month.

what could possiblie go wrong?  More space and bandwidth (which I don't need) and its about 1/3 the price. I Just loose my pseudo-root control and ability to install anything I want.

Do NOT use godaddy hosting. Go to 1and1 and pay less.

Would Amazon EC2 be too much per month/overkill?
