Order new coffee grinder
« on: April 08, 2011, 05:33:41 PM »
I've been buying my coffee each day since I started my new job and have been wanting to start making my own again at work. They have a pot at work but they use pre-ground coffee and blah blah blah, I'm a snob (maybe I can convert them). So I bought an extra single service Malitta "Ready set joe cone" manual drip and filters (I use it at home quite a bit). After a bit of reading, I ordered a Hario Mini Mill. I went for the smaller one since I'll just be doing my 16oz mug at work and didn't want it to take up much space. It should be here next week and I'll post a follow up.

On a side note, I also bought the black and decker burr grinder (the ~$25 one available at Target and such) and it's awful. It works, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I'm donating mine somewhere.

People seem to love it. I would be more into all this if I drank coffee on a regular basis. When i worked a regular shift I would always pick up a cup of coffee, sometimes a few times a day. But when it comes to brewing it myself I rarely drink it because I'm lazy.

I would like one of these.

I almost bought one the other week. I've wanted one for a while too. My gf wants the one that grinds and brews but I think I prefer the separate devices. I didn't want to drop $100 on the grinder and another $200 on the maker if it has the grinder in it. My old hand mill does quite well though. She just wants to wake up to coffee being made in the morning.

The grind and brew fails for me.  If either breaks you are hosed.  And the portable is way nicer and quieter.  Kind of like the TVs with VCRs when one failed....

My parents have a grind and brew, it's pretty cool. I think they've had it for a year or so with no problems, and they use it everyday. Not sure what brand it is though.

Lots of manufacturers make that style.  Capresso makes a really nice one.  Cuisinart makes one also.  Loud though.

Got the mill today. I gave it a try right away when I got home. The sort of amusing thing was that the box and instructions were not in English. Thankfully the device is not all that complicated.

It's got pretty good build quality. I was expecting something a little bit cheaper feeling but it's quite solid. The crank handle has no problem staying on either (some mentioned it can be tricky). It has a really good range of grind too and is pretty consistent. It's also a bit larger than it looked like from the videos/pictures online but it's still pretty portable. It feels nice in the hand. It's just right for enough coffee for a travel mug. So far I'm happy with the purchase. We'll see how durable it is after some use.

Oh and it's pretty quiet too (a nice muted sound), nice bonus.
