Well, since I have to justify how I spend my money to you two, I'm sure some of the money does go to charity (I've never run a race that didn't benefit some medical group or another).  Many of the racers (me included probably) will also be raising money for specific charities

Marathons are expensive to put on, $60 is way cheaper than I thought it would be.  If you want to get real technical, I'm paying $60 for the experience to run the marathon, but I'll also get a shirt, a medal, gatorade and food along the way, and food and entertainment at the pre-race expo and the post race party.

edit: here are some of the charities that will benefit: http://www.freepmarathon.com/charities

I can't imagine all the expenses of hosting a marathon.  You have to secure the route which means paying for cops and security.  Plus all the permit fees.  Then you have all the goodies like Govt mentioned.  I imagine most of the people handing out the water/juice/food/etc are volunteers but the stuff itself costs.  Some marathons also have a cash prize for winners (not sure if this one does).

I agree that $60 sounds cheap for what it is (still more than I would pay to run)

There is more than $20K in prize money being handed out.  Also, this is international (over the Ambassador Bridge and through the Windsor Tunnel), so that's even more complicated

The costs do rise as you get closer to the race, though - if you actually have a spot open right beforehand (there won't be), it's $125

A guy at work says he'll pay for me if I qualify for it.  I'm not going to be anywhere near fast enough to qualify for Boston, but I suppose it's a nice gesture.

So where is this mythical land where almost 20,000 people get together and run at the same time for free?

The number does matter.  Putting on an organized event for 20,000 people is vastly different then a group of people getting together for a weekly run.

That wasn't a run.  Look at the pictures, it was a walk with some people running around.

Cheez, I wish you luck. Whatever brings you joy. Godspeed
in this endeavor. Remember to expel any solid wastes from
your body first, or you'll end up like that guy on the internet.
Every distance runner has been that guy before.  Some of us were lucky enough to avoid the cameras (and blame the fat kid for the smell)

Thank you for your well wishes.

Oh, and so far this year I have run 0 kilometers.  I don't expect this to change until Saturday, at least.

I guess when you take all of it into consideration it makes sense to charge some money. I didn't think about it earlier, but I used to pay between $50-$150 to enter into motocross races.
