Title: College football (USA)
Post by: charlie on November 16, 2006, 08:30:58 PM
Please tell me that everybody here is rational and sane and believes a college footbal Div-IA playoff is the only way to go.

Please tell me that everybody here is rational and sane and believes that the BCS is still completely better than things were before the BCS.

Please tell me to stick it if you disagree.

There will likely never be a playoff system, the bowls are making too much money at the moment to allow either being disbanded or being relegated to a national quarterfinal or semifinal game. The only way I see it changing is if four really strong popular schools (for example USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Florida) all finish a year undefeated creating an outcry. I just think its funny that one of the big objections to having a playoff is that it took the kids away from school too much playing the extra game, then this year they go and schedule a 12th game for everybody.

As for the BCS, don't mind it, just another way to screw up the same problem.

Oh, and GO OHIO STATE!

Yeah, not much of a discussion, Michigan got screwed end of story.

On the other hand, I might be a little more undecided about the whole playoff thing.  Watching UCLA beat the crap out of USC was a lot of fun, and if a playoff was in place that game would have been completely meaningless since at most it might have cost USC a playoff seeding or two.  Too many other sports have regular seasons that are pointless (think hockey) that maybe the way college football is now ain't such a bad thing.

Why did Michigan get screwed (just asking)? I mean, yeah, I don't actually watch very many games so I don't know, but if the pollsters thought Florida was the better team, then they deserve to be #2. What's the big deal?

And I will just ignore your comment about playoffs PJ. Wow! ;)

Honestly, I just really don't like the fact that they were penalized just because they didn't play this week.  Their only loss was to OSU, and only by 3 points.  The pollsters thought that they were the consensus #2 before this week, but because Florida beat a team that honestly they should have anyway, they get dropped?  I don't like it.

(really the biggest reason is that I'd like to see an all-Big Ten NC game)

Yeah, while not fully proven, most people think the pollsters dropped Michigan to third simply because they didn't want to see a rematch.

I have no idea which team is better so I don't really care that much. I do agree that it sucks that Michigan got dropped. But I am also happy that the Rose Bowl got a traditional Pac-10 vs Big Ten matchup. And when USC beats Michigan then there won't be as much controversy.
