laptop fan
« on: July 06, 2011, 10:20:51 AM »
I have a Gateway M-7844u laptop and the fan in it started making a lot of noise last night.  It's 2 years old so I think I'll just replace the fan but I can't seem to find a site that tells me what fan to get and all of the gateway parts sites don't sell the fans.

So can I just find a replacement fan and pop it in?  Are they a standard size?

First, I'd try taking the fan apart and lubricating it, that worked perfectly for me. You may find that the fan is touching the housing or something and a little bending can fix it (see my other thread).

Second suggestion is to actually remove the fan and see if you can find a part number. I know there were a few different options for my MBP depending on exactly when it was manufactured.

What did you lubricate with?

Replace it.  Measure it (not just diagonally but depth too) and get one that fits.  You might Google to see what other laptops are using for fans and get an idea what kind of flow is typical.
