Title: BF2
Post by: ober on June 22, 2005, 12:51:18 PM
Anyone getting it today?  I didn't pre-order it, but I'm definately getting it very soon.  I honestly can't stop playing the demo.  I've probably played it 50 times and I'll do it 50 more times before I buy it.  It's great and I can't wait to see what other things they put into the full version.

I'm not because I don't have a good enough video card

Upgrade?  I'm really surprised you can play Doom3 and HL2 and not this.

This game kicks SO much ass.  The bots are very smart, the orders and the entire chain of command system is solid, and the vehicles are awesome.

My favorite so far has been flying the Harrier... vertical take off and then kicking in the after-burners to move... slowing to a hover to land.... it gives me wood.

Is it all modern, or is there still some WWII stuff in it?

All modern.  Modern weapons/vehicles/radar, etc.  Unless they come out with a WWII mod, I think it's going to stay this way.

That's too bad.  I'm sure there'll be a WWII mod anyways.  The mod community for BF1942 was great - I hope this is as good.

Don't ask me how I landed it like this... but it was freakin awesome.  I had to take a pic :)

Nope.  Desert Combat, a mod for BF1942, had it.  So did Operation Flashpoint.

That game looks pretty sweet.  After I get an upgrade, I'll have to try it.

You won't be disappointed, trust me :)

And ygf, you can fly helicopters in the GTA(3+ anyways) games as well.

EDIT:  I'll try to take some more screenshots tonite... you guys have to see the Harrier in action... this thing is fuckin sweet.

I knew about GTA, but it's not a first person shooter :p

So far, it's cool.  Only played a few single player fights so far, but I'll play online when I get back home.  I really don't get why I was forced to upgrade.  It's a pretty game, but it's nothing amazing, graphicswise.

Here's a picture of my second landing.  The first one was similar, but it was behind a tree, so you couldn't really see anything.

Actually, I think the graphics are pretty good.  I'd compare them with Doom/HL2... then again, you didn't have to upgrade for those, huh?

Nope, I didn't.

Now that I've gotten a chance to play on some of the other maps, I think you're pretty close with the graphics comparison.  I just didn't have time to look around and admire things :)

I suck at this game.  I was really good at BF1942, but haven't gotten the hang of this.

Trust me... it comes with time.  I'm starting to get kickass with the attack helicopter and I'm pretty good at following orders, which really helps.

A few tips that I didn't pick up on when I started (and was told about by coworkers):
1) Don't forget to join a squad.  They'll give you orders and it helps your teamwork points and seems to help you win if you follow them.
2) Don't forget that you can take any position in a vehicle no matter what spot the bots take (F1-F8 keys).
3) You can't be commander and play the game.  It's too hard.  You end up trying to play the game and all the bots just sit there waiting for orders.  If you are a squad leader, you can call for supplies and artillery.

That's the major ones I missed the first time around.

#2 is the same as it was in BF1942.  Unfortunately, the bots never listen when I tell them to bail out.  This is bad because I'm a big fan of suicide runs.  Be a Spec Ops guy, toss all your C4 on the outside of a vehicle, drive it in to a mass of enemies, and BOOM.  If you time it right, you won't even take damage.

Can you play this well online without a microphone?
Title: BF2
Post by: ober on July 05, 2005, 10:04:43 AM
HAHAHA... I usually just get a running start and I've found that if you hit the offending vehicle hard enough, it'll take you both out.  And I'm almost always spec ops... I love running up to an enemy tank, tossing 2 packs of C4 and running off to blow them up.  And their rifle kicks so much ass.

I've only played online once or twice so far and I didn't have a mic and most of the other people didn't either.  A lot of people are used to the Q and T menus for comm.

Yeah, I don't know why most of the US guns only do burst fire.  It sucks.  Given the choice between burst and single shot, I'll almost always pick single shot, just for the added accuracy.

Yesterday a tank was hauling ass at me, I hopped out of the way just in time, slapped on a pack of C4, and blasted it as it was going around the corner.  It was great.

Post by: ober on July 05, 2005, 11:05:16 AM
Yeah... burst fire sucks, but I find most of the automatics have so much kick that you start firing at something and you're very quickly shooting way over their heads.

The thing that is crazy about this game is that they actually have active armor.  You pretty much have to cap someone in the head to kill em because chest shots hit nothing but armor.

So... I need a new monitor.  I've basically been playing 2 maps on this game all the time (Dragon Valley and Gulf of Oman), because it's so damn hard to see most of the other maps.  My monitor is slowly dying and just keeps getting darker and darker.

This sucks, but I'm still addicted to this game.  Oh, and in case anyone hadn't heard, v1.02 patch has been released!

Box says GFFX, but honestly I'd be surprised if it hadn't worked on my old GF4

I might have to get this game. I played the demo for Xbox and it was pretty fun (not too surprising considering how much I liked the first one). Don't know if I should go for PC or Xbox, though. It would be nice to get some use out of my joystick again for flying those helicopters :D

I remember on the Desert Combat mod, you could land a helicopter on a tank and make it sink into the ground....

I'm almost up a rank.  It's so close I can smell it.  And I've gotten about 8 awards now... well, 2 awards and 6 badges.  Pretty sweet!

Can you recommend a server?  My connection's plenty fast, but I keep getting crappy pings.

Also, when we goan rumble?
Title: BF2
Post by: ober on July 25, 2005, 04:24:05 PM
I don't know specific server names... I don't think I've been on the same one twice.  And I generally ignore the ping times... they're obviously inaccurate because some show up as zero.  I've had no problems with ping times in the high 200s.

I dunno.  I'm going to a lanparty sometime this week probably... but it'll probably be a local game, unless I can get them to a house with a connection other than satellite.

The lag has been so bad when I've been playing online that I can't do it for more than a couple minutes at a time.  I've been playing GTA:SA lately, too, so that takes away from BF2 time.

Post by: ober on August 05, 2005, 09:37:21 AM
Lag?  I haven't seen much of any lag lately.  And apparently it's about to get better.  From other places I've read this morning, people are saying that EA is killing stat tracking by 3rd parties.  There were a lot of sites that were querying the stat server constantly, which was slowing everything down, including Gamespy.  They're going to block all of that, which should improve things overall.

I played for 4 hours last nite and I don't think I saw much lag at all.  Make sure you're getting on a Ranked server, or even an EA server.

I like games.  EA makes a lot of good games.

Hell, I'm sold.

I hate EA as well, but they do make a lot of good games (most with flaws of some sort).  But how many games do you know that don't end up getting patched or changed after release?  I think EA gets hit with the same stuff MS does... so many more people use it that it becomes more of a news-worthy item when something goes wrong with it.

And granted, they've screwed over some series (C&C comes to mind), but overall the do make a lot of good games... and this is one of them.

The feelings were split pretty much down the board on those two.  I don't like the monopoly thing any more than you do.

> Then there was that whole EA Spouse controversy.

Don't care.

You don't care that they treated their employees horribly? Why?

No one is forcing them to work there.  Presumably a programmer for EA could find a job somewhere else pretty easily.

FYI, the stats are working TONS better.  Awards and ribbons are actually showing up as you get them and points are applied immediately now.  I don't know what they did, but it fixed everything.
