Internet speeds
« on: March 04, 2018, 11:39:47 AM »
We haven't done this in a while.  Spectrum recently increased us to 100 mbps for free so I went to test it this morning.  Pretty happy with this:

We have frontier (which bought AT&T U-verse in Connecticut).  We pay for a crappy 18Mbs down, usually when I test I actually get around 10-12Mbs.

This test I just did now is on my wi-fi connected PC and the kids are watching youtube on at least one other device in the house, so it's par for the course.

The "internet" portion of my bill is $44.99.

Jesus that's awful.  I pay 69 for internet which is definitely more than that but the difference is not linear.

Comcast, not sure what the internet cost alone is.  Usually 160 to 200 down.

This is pretty impressive I guess... I've got comcast's xfinity performance pro and didn't realize they upped the speed.

I pay $90 for TV+Internet, plus $60 in fees and equipment for a $150 total bill. ($10 - HD, $10 - DVR, $10 - 2nd TV, $10 - Modem, $6 Broadcast fee, $5 regional sports, $9 taxes/fees).

I like fast internet so I'm paying $90 / month.  $65 for internet, $15 for speed increase, and $10 for equipment.  We don't have cable TV anymore.

@knuck we have 1 in the living room and another the wife brought with her when she moved in that is still in the box.

One of the guys I work with is originally from Moldova.  He said they are the poorest country in Europe but they have 1 GB connections everywhere and he was only paying 7 or 8 bucks a month.  He said he was floored when he came here and saw how slow things were and how much we pay for it.

@knuck - we had 1 tv for years and only in the living room.  We were given old crappy tvs by my in-laws that went in the basement for the kids off and on but all those were thrown away.  So we were back down to 1.  About a year ago we bought a small tv for our bedroom since the kids are sometimes on the main tv and we wanted the option.  Then, as stated in the other thread, we bought a bigger tv for the living room a few weeks ago.  Our tv that we had in the living room is currently in the basement in storage but my plan is to set it up down there for the kids to play video games this summer so they don't bug the shit out of my wife.

Two TVs... we rarely use the one in our bedroom, and we could save $120 by getting rid of the cable on it. But also my wife mentioned she'd like something bigger than the 19" one that's there now, so who knows.

Update: The wife says it's not worth $10 to have cable in the bedroom. We can leave it with Apple TV/Amazon.

I'll cancel tomorrow.

I have to say... I really like the setup we have.  We got a Roku tv for the bedroom and what we watch from the cable company is all over the internet, just like netflix or amazon.  They have a Roku app that streams all the tv stations we get plus ALL the on demand stuff we have access to.  And we don't pay anything extra for extra tvs.  It's pretty much the perfect setup... if you can get over the random quality glitches on live tv (like the picture went super blurry several times during the superbowl and generally during sporting events).  It is like it randomly buffers.  Audio is fine always but the picture goes super pixelated and then takes maybe 20-30 seconds to get back to hi-def.  It's annoying, but it's cheap.  Interestingly, it never happens when we're watching something on demand (which is how we watch all the tv shows).  So that part of it really only affects the sports we watch.

I agree with Obes on the Roku.  What an a amazing piece of work.  It is all I access when using the TV.

We have a Roku attached to our 2nd smaller TV that's not connected to an antenna. Our primary TV has OTA but we also have a Sling subscription that works on both. Definitely worth cutting our previous cable subscription and changing over.

This is in the upstairs loft. It's a desktop with a wireless adapter. Router is on the first floor behind a door with a metallic screen. So overall i'd say it's ok. Plus i have a ton of devices connected as well.
