Recommend me a monitor

As I write this, my 6 year old 19" CRT is waving unnervingly on the right side.  I'm starting to wonder if it's just about time to replace this before it craps out entirely.  It can only displays resolutions up to 1280X1024, it's old, and this wavering is really fucking with my head.  I'm also wondering if it's about to explode, so if this post ends suddenly, just assume it blew up and my skull is full of glass and plastic fragments.

Criteria - I'd like it to be 19 or 21", and whether it's a CRT or LCD is not really that important.  I'd like to be able to display higher resolutions; I've got a GeForce6 and would like to be able to use it to its full potential.  Also, it goes without saying, but I don't want to spend a ton of cash on it.  $2-300 would be pretty good, if it's possible (goodbye 1st quarter bonus - you'll be missed).  21" is preferable, if I can get something for that price, but I've got no problem with a 19".

Also, I'd li

Looks like you're best bet for the price and size might be the CRT's.  The LCD's are like double the price for 21" - Though the 19" are similar in price to the 21" CRTs...
govtcheez03:  i kind of look for it - i seek out stupidity and annoy it until it either gets better, gets banned, or goes away on its own

Yeah, I think for those prices I'm going to look at 19"ers.

Tiger Direct has some 19" ones for under $100.  Does anyone know what might be up with those.

This wiggle is driving me fucking crazy.

It's a real shame you don't live in the UK. I have a 21" CRT you could have for nowt. Postage to the States would be horrendous, and it wouldn't work afterwards.

Of the 19" CRTs, the only one I'd really trust is the Viewsonic E90FB.  That was my previous monitor and lasted me about 4 years, and it was crystal clear up until about 6 months ago.

Aye (to Rob) over here I've found loads of CRT's up to 19 inches for as little as £70-90.

I dream of the day when I'll be able to afford a 21" CRT with a flat screen, y'know, those weird hybrid things.

*edit*

CRT's only last for around 5 years in general, but I think they provide a much better picture, whereas TFT / LCD tend to last longer but the lag gets on my nerves, especially when playing games.

By the way cheez, if you watch bensbargains.net, they often run a KDS 19" monitor that I just bought for $70 after rebates (if you exclude the $30 they didn't take off immediately that I still have to call them about and the $30 rebate that they wouldn't honor because they said it was postmarked too late, despite the fact that the $30 and $50 rebate were to be postmarked on the same day and I sent them out at the same time and the $50 rebate went through fine  )

So yeah, F that, don't ever buy anything from Office Depot.

Can anyone tell me anything about Acers?  CompUSA is selling a 19" LCD for $250 that got 4 stars on Froogle.

May help you with LCDs, although keep in mind that unless you want to get sick, you should stay away from LCDs for gaming.  There are a few that are capable, and you'd be surprised at the stats.  At one point, I heard you had to have 8ms refresh rates, but some of them that I saw in a review had refresh rates as high as 16ms.  I think the best one had either a 12 or 16ms refresh rate.

I also don't think any of them were Acers.

Most of the other reviews I saw were good, but most claim it's not very good for FPS.

I recommend the samsung lcds from newegg, I have the Syncmaster 710N which is the 17" model, the 19" model is now the price I paid for the 17", I believe it's 8ms response time which is ~ to crt response time. It's crystal clear...not sure on the max rez though you'd have to look. My 17" only goes up to 1280x1024 but I like it that way (i've got a n6 series card too btw, awesome aren't they?). Anywho, I noticed a good silver hyundai in the same price range, but I've never tried them.

Actually, Waldo - that's the monitor I just bought (from Best Buy, though).  The douche at CompUSA didn't know shit about shit, so I didn't buy from them.  I decided to wait it out.  However, when I woke up this morning, I found that my monitor had killed itself, probably because of how i posted last night.  Since ES and the Internet at large could not live without me, I had to get back, and quick!  BB had the 19" model on sale for $329 after rebates, so I snagged it.

Unfortunately, I also bought a DVI cable ($53!) which doesn't seem to be working for me right now.  I'll try a little more to figure out, then take that back if I can't get it.
