Topic: Boot freezes during BIOS initialization

Ive managed to get my laptop to a state where it FREEZES WHILE THE BIOS LOADS and/or DURING HARDWARE INITIALIZATION.... FUCK!!!!

Basically my box doesn't even get to the point where its ready to boot off any type of media. So i can't boot into any OS, can't boot off CD, can't even enter BIOS setup.... It just hangs there during the initial BIOS start up.

any ideas?

well, after letting it sit for an hour or so it booted ok. you can all rest easy now.

Sounds to me like a PSU on the way out.  I'd be surprised if you don't see it again.

well they dont really. correct me if im wrong, i dont do alot of laptop work, but doesnt the laptop simply have a voltage regulator type deal that controls teh power from the wall or battery to prevent overload? Think thats pretty much it. IMO, you have ram on the fritz or a slowly dying cmos battery. Run memtest.

Not if you run 'em off the battery they don't - and all teh PSU does is charge teh battery.

edit>> well, OK not strictly true, coz you can run a lappy of the PSU with no battery in it (well, I can mine anyway) but it isn't really the same dealy as a desktop power supply.

That's true I guess.  My next suggestion would be the same as RoD's then.  Run memtest and see what you get.

Well everything is working fine now. If I find more problems Ill download memtest. Untill then, ill just pretend everything works and trust all my school work to be accessible from my harddrive.

With these types of errors on stationary computers, you normally disconnect everything (everything) from the MB and see if it signals the correct error message. Then attach the processor, the memory, the the graphic card, until you find the error.

This is a little harder to do on laptops.

i wouldnt wait to run tests bro. If you wait and it is your ram or something and it dies completely now you have to play wack a mole with a blindfold.
