Yep.  Basically, if you need a special app to edit it then you probably shouldn't be messing with that file.

I think since Spybot can't touch the file for some reason, I'm just going to pull my hosts file from my desktop and put it on her laptop to see if it resolves the issues.

Stop the use Chrome bullshit.

Jesus Christ get the fuck over that.  It isn't funny it is old and broken.

Ben.  I just had the same issue on Marv's PC with Chrome.  I used Malwarebytes but I think CCleaner actually fixed the issue.  Can't be sure.

Also give this a shot.

Might want to try another antivirus app.  Dunno what you are using but I have had fair luck with MS SE.

I have heard that this was a good option for locating viruses...neat concept anyhoo.

If you find a suspicious file this may help.

G'luck.  Oh and FF isn't so bad.  I use Chrome but still think of FF as just about as good.
Shit, I need to try this stuff too.

I already stated Chrome can run into that stuff too.

It has enough advantages to make it my default but it isn't infallible.

So, I think I may have resolved it.  Not 100% sure yet.  I played with the security on the hosts file and got it enabled so spybot could immunize it.  The strange thing was, when I first went into the file I didn't notice how long it was.  The top of the file looked totally normal, but something had gone in and put 6 entries about 200 lines down.  So I removed that, immunized with spybot and then changed the security to actually DENY the ability for anyone to write to it.

Back track a touch... I did the spybot immunize and then went and surfed around a little and those entries appeared again in the hosts file.  So I removed them again and then did the DENY part.  I just checked again and the entries have not been put back yet.  I still want to scan again for the trojan that keeps coming back but I think the main problem might be gone with the lockdown on the hosts file.
