Windows XP Temp files
« on: August 09, 2005, 03:27:11 PM »
Hi, guys, I need your advice. I found out that my Local Settings folder in Documents and Settings is bigger than  1 GB. In that folder there are following folders:
Aplication data, History, Temp, Temporary Internet Files and bunch of files named something like this TempNER00EE6BE8.TMP
Problem is that I'm running out of disk space and those files in folder Local Settings (not in Temp folders)occupy more than 1 GB.
Is it safe to delete them?

I'm waiting your advice...
Thanks

-Micko

The files within those folders and the *.tmp files can be safely deleted generally speaking. I'd leave the Application data folders alone unless you're sure of what you're doing though.

Oh, and moved to Software.

Thanks for the prompt response, sorry about the board, didn't pay attention. Yes, I plan to delete only that files that have .tmp extension., but I'm curious to know why they stayed in the folder and not beeing removed by windows?

No problemo.

As to your other question, I'm not sure, but I'm sure someone else will know...

I don't know that Windows actually goes in and cleans that folder out... AFAIK, each application is expected to clear out it's own files when it no longer needs them...

Echo Major_Small.  I've seen some apps that create HUGE temp files (HP Photo/Scan software is a major culprit) and never delete them.  My mother-in-law's computer had close to 6Gb of random temp files on her drive the last time I was there.

That's pretty sad. I mean.. how stupid can you get..

And doesn't Windows have a Hard Drive Cleanup wizard or something? Use that.

The application data folder is usually where save files for games and personal things are stored for applications.  It's an easier way to manage customizing programs based on who's logged in to the system.
