I happen to run across a discussion of Peterson and somebody sent this link of critiques. I didn't read these (I skimmed through one) and I'm not saying I agree with them, but if you're interested in why there's backlash against him it might be a good place to start:

It can, but individual cases can always have different causes anyway.

And just because I think maternity leave is the largest contributor to gender wage gap doesn't mean I believe that there isn't a problem there. I think society would be better off if we looked for ways to bridge the gap (without discouraging babies).

Let's close the gap by normalizing and legislating paternal leave!

There's an interesting (mini)documentary on Netflix's "Explained" about the gender pay gap. Apparently, the gap isn't so much between men and women, it's really between mothers and everyone else (ie., men and women with no kids).
