Title: Drone
Post by: Jake on January 13, 2016, 05:30:14 PM
Looks like the price of drones is going down in a hurry. The DJI Phantom 3 (http://amzn.com/B013U0F6EQ) was around $700 before Christmas. Yesterday I saw it at Best Buy and amazon for $499. Today, my friend found it on clearance at target for $350! I couldn't resist and asked him to buy one for me. Looking forward to trying it out over the weekend :)

FYI - looks like the prices are going down because manufacturer's think the demand will significantly drop due to regulations and possible associated fees they may carry.

Other than taking overhead pics or whatever and just the fun of flying one, I guess I don't see the thrill of owning one. I'm curious what you plan to use it for or is it just a toy?

My brother in law races them in a league. FPV with goggles. Looks like fun.

Ober, I really want to explore video making, editing, and youtube style publishing - that is why I got it.

Here is the video from the first flight.

Technically this was our second flight, but it was the first recorded flight! During the very first try I didn’t notice that the SD card was full, so after a brief hover, I landed and replaced it with an empty one.
I wasn’t sure about flying our brand new, quite expensive, toy in the freezing temps. The literature shows it should not be flown below 32 degrees Fahrenheit – but after reading some forum posts I was again filled with confidence. Before the first flight, I let the motors worm up by idling them for about a minute or so.
I had the settings set for beginner mode so could only fly in a radius of 30 feet at a max altitude of 100 feet – which put me just above the tree line of the pines surrounding us.
