Title: Firewall?
Post by: ahluka on October 17, 2007, 02:03:23 PM
Well I just an email from McAfee notifying me that my protection will "run out" today and that I'm eligible for an "upgrade" at a "discounted price". I had no idea this was going to happen (dense much?) so obviously, I'm not paying.

I was using a free firewall before I bought mcafee but I can't for the life of my remember what it was called, so here I am, asking what y'all use (if it's free).

"px swodniw"?

:p

The only "free" firewall I am aware of (and I don't even know if its still "around") is/was Zone Alarm.

Hmm, I always wonder why people think they need a firewall...

Especially people behind a NAT router.

Especially when everyone I've ever seen was a piece of alarmist crap trying to justify its own existence.

I gotta say.  If you already have a router in place I can't see why a firewall is needed.

Security is a matter of layers of protection. Sometimes it's enough to be behind a router/firewall but sometime you just feel more paranoid. I don't think it's a bad idea at all to run a firewall on each box. Although, simply having a firewall won't prevent stupid people from opening virus attachments.
I don't see the need to spend money on one though.

Yeah maybe I don't need a firewall - I feel better having one though.
