The Goal: Pick the most interesting group of individuals from throughout history to join you on you on a deserted island for the rest of your life.
How this works
We go in turns one at a time picking people from history to be on our list. You can't take a person that has already been selected. When we're done we compare lists and everybody votes on which they like best. The fun is in seeing what/who interests the other pickers, and trying to pick people you want on your list before somebody else takes them.
Tournament Seeding (draft order in parentheses)
- drakkenkorin (6)
- micah (8)
- JaWiB (5)
- ober (4)
- Duwenbasden (3)
- kermi3 (1)
- charlie (2)
- axon (7)
- PJYelton (9)

Draft results by person (http://www.entropysink.com/forums/index.php?topic=8864.msg94878#msg94878)
I encourage anybody with even a little bit of interest to participate. The more people there are, the more fun it is. If you're worried about any of the details I'll help you through it. Just give it a go!

You don't have to read all this, but if you have a specific question about how this thing works, look here...
Official Rules (Important rules in red.)
Participation
- All participants will declare their desire to participate by saying so explicitly in a comment in this thread.
- Anybody who asks to join the draft after it has begun can do so but must wait at least one full round before they can start choosing. Please feel free to join if we just started but you didn't sign up yet. The more the merrier.
Selection Rules
- The premise is that you're on a deserted island but with plenty of food and drink. You have no entertainment except for the companionship of a group of people selected from throughout human history to join you.
- You can pick anybody who you reasonably believe is/was a real person. For example, you can't pick Santa Claus, but you can pick Saint Nicholas.
- You cannot pick somebody from your private life. In other words, no picking your wife, kids, best friend, another ES poster, etc.
- Picking a person who isn't considered part of "history" (e.g. a famous actor/actress, athlete, or writer) is fine.
- Picking a person who is still alive is fine.
- Once a person is selected, nobody else can pick that person.
- Please PM me if you have a specific question about whether a person is eligible.
- Posting an image and a link to wikipedia or any other site with information about the person would be helpful (but is not required). The more information you post, including why you made your pick, the more interesting the draft is. Please post at least enough information to clearly identify who you are talking about.
Draft Specifics
- The draft order will be determined by random draw via http://www.randomizer.org/form.htm. I promise I won't cheat.
- The draft will be a snake draft, meaning that whoever has the last pick in one round will have the first pick in the next. For example, if we have six people they will pick like this: 1-2-3-4-5-6-6-5-4-3-2-1-1-2-3...
- There will be 12 rounds, meaning everybody gets 12 picks. This is open for discussion.
- Each person will have 24 hours to make their pick. However, Saturday and Sunday don't count (although you can still pick on the weekends if it is your turn). The 24 hours starts after the previous person's pick or after the previous person's 24 hours expires (whichever comes first).
- Simply posting the name of your selection in this thread is enough to count it as being selected.
- If your turn is approaching and you know you will be away from the internet, you can PM your selection to me or the person scheduled to pick after you. You can also simply announce that you will be away and that your 24 hours can be skipped as a courtesy.
- If your turn has been skipped, you may at any time make your pick for that turn. However, you cannot pick a person who has already been selected after your turn was skipped. If somebody else picked your person then you are out of luck.
Judging
- When the draft is complete, we will have a tournament style playoff of all lists. All ES members will be allowed to vote in each round of the playoffs.
- The draft participants will be seeded according to another run of the randomizer that created the draft order. Some people will likely end up with a bye in the first round based simply on the luck of the draw.
- You will have until a few days after the draft to make up any missed picks. Anybody with more missed selections than actual selections will not be eligible for the tournament.

Ok, now is the time to discuss rule modifications, additions or deletions, and to declare your participation. This was originally micah's idea, I just made up rules based on how I thought it would work best to be run (and because I like to be rather open-ended about what people are allowed to pick). So if anybody has better ideas, and micah especially, please say so in this thread.
-
I'm in. The only suggestion I have, and I'm not sure best way to phrase this, but I say no picking someone solely on looks or sex appeal.
-
I'm in
-
In.
-

+1, we already head that contest.
/I'm in too
-
Cool...
My thinking on not explicitly disallowing sex appeal based picks was in case somebody wanted to add just one or two people based on hotness to round out their islands with a diverse group of people. (It's also a somewhat gray area that can be hard to enforce.)
But I'm certainly on board with making sure everybody focuses on the "interesting" part of the historical person rather than physical features.
So do you want to strongly discourage sexiness picks or just disallow them outright?
-
With this group I'm sure discouraging is just fine.
-
I'm in.
-
Oh this one is gonna be really hard - sure I'm in.
-
I'll try this then
-
can we get a point of clarification on the premise?
are we going for notoriety of historical significance (which might include villainous characters who changed history but who we might not want to be friends with) or just people we want on our island (to help build a shelter, purify sea water, build a radio from coconuts, entertain us with witty banter or their intelligence and maybe have sex with)
-
Good question! I was thinking of just picking historical figures I found interesting, not necessarily thinking about being on an island and junk.
-
I would say assume you can live on the island just fine even if you have nothing but philosophers with you, but if you come up with a useful purpose for a historical figure than that may sway the voting in your favor. There should be some reason though why you pick this figure beyond the fact that they are famous.
-
I'm in.
I'll try this then
Sweet! New blood. :)

This is how I view it. The island really is meaningless, it's just kind of a goofy theme to drive the "story". Basically, the point is that you would be spending time with these people and only these people.
Each individual can use whatever criteria they'd like in making selections. I was kind of thinking about the interesting people bit. People could be interesting because they lived through or participated in great moments in history, or maybe because they had a specific personality you find intriguing. I think a villainous character would be just fine, I think you can assume you won't get killed or hurt by anybody you pick.
All that's open to discussion, but that's what I was imagining.
Oh, and assume they could all magically speak your language. :)
-
Only those with which you would have sex with. Duh.
-
I'd love to have a few more people, but eight is a pretty good number. So whether we get more people or not I'll start this up on Monday or Tuesday of next week.
Start thinking of who you want to pick!
-
Alright, I'm in. I should be good for internet for most of the rest of the summer :dblthumb2:
-
Awesome...
I think we've waited long enough for stragglers. As I mention in the beginning, I don't mind people being added once we've started, so chime in if it looks like fun.
I'll do the randomization of the draft order now... I promise I won't cheat! :)
-
Ok done...
-
Ok, kermi, you're on the clock!
-
well shit not expected...Let's start this off with a world class playboy and traveler. A statesman and a renascence man with unique insight in modern philosophy and science:
Benjamen Franklin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_franklin)
-
Ah, very nice pick. Lots of good conversation and kite flying to be done. :)
-
My first pick...
Jesus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus
I'm not actually Christian, but I think Jesus (assuming he existed as an actual person) would be very interesting on a bunch of different levels. One, I find religion interesting in general, and I'd love his take on modern day religion, including of course Christianity. Also, I find that based on my limited knowledge I like and agree with many of the principles he taught, and discussing his view on the world in general would be pretty darn interesting.
Ok, Duwenbasden, you're up!
-
24 hours has passed. I just sent Duwenbasden a PM, but ober you can go now if you'd like.
Duwenbasden, you can post your pick whenever you want.
-
Winston Churchill: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_churchill
-
JaWiB, that means you're up.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla
You've all probably heard of and know a bit about Thomas Edison, but Nikola Tesla was, in my opinion, a much cooler scientist/engineer/inventor and much more worthy of fame. Turns out, Edison was pretty much a douche to Tesla. Even while Tesla proposed alternating current transmission for electric power, Edison did everything he could to make AC seem more dangerous and inferior to DC. We all know how that contest ended up--except for the fact that Tesla ended up completely broke despite being a pioneer of one of the most important technologies we still use today. The fact that he claimed to have invented some very unbelievable devices only adds to his intrigue; I still wonder if we might find some of those claims had more truth than people gave him credit for.

its funny too because, had Edison succeeded in suppressing AC power, we'd be screwed because you can't transmit DC over long distance. We never would have had the electrical revolution and would still be stuck in the mid-industrial age.
speaking of Tesla, did you ever see the movie: The Prestige (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/)? good flick
-
So its my turn now!
For my first pick, I'll go with one of my favorites Edgar Allan Poe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_allan_poe).
That way, he can entertain me with scarry stories around the camp fire on the island :p
-
speaking of Tesla, did you ever see the movie: The Prestige (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/)? good flick
Heh, I was just about to bring up "Plus he invented the teleportation device!"
Oh, and Charlie, is there any actualy controversy whether or not Jesus existed? I don't think anyone doubts that he was a real person, though son of God is obviously debatable.
-
Oh, and Charlie, is there any actualy controversy whether or not Jesus existed? I don't think anyone doubts that he was a real person, though son of God is obviously debatable.
I'm not entirely sure. I've seen people argue that the stories of Jesus were just an amalgamation of a bunch of other stories from that time period, including many from some Egyptian dude named Horus. I guess that could imply that he didn't exist, but I've always been under the assumption that he was a real person.
If he wasn't, he isn't going to be much fun on the island.
-
Egyptian King Khufu
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khufu
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pyramid_of_Giza
I would like to know how these guys really did everything - where there aliens helping them? :)
-
I'm liking this draft already.
-
By the way, you're up micah.
-
This draft is moving slower than molasses in January.
-
sorry, i've been busy... its probably already my turn again and I missed my first pick. I'll post soon when I have a few minutes.
-
Since it was the weekend, you just timed out a few hours ago. So PJYelton, you're up.
micah and Duwenbasden can each post their first pick whenever they want.
-
Ok, gotta go with my hero, the eccentric inventor jack of all trades, Leonardo Da Vinci:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_da_Vinci
I would just love to pick his brain even for a few minutes to see his thought process in action.
-
And with my second round pick, me being such an astronomy enthusiast I'd love to scan the night sky from my island with the man who made it all possible by vastly improving the telescope, Galileo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei
-
Oh, and I'd like to add an extra rule to our draft, similar to the first draft we did where we were allowed to pick someone at the peak in their lives. Can we do the same here? I have a few people in mind who I'd like to have on my island at a certain time in their life before they might have become crazy/irrelevent/ridiculed/etc.
-

Makes sense to me. I was basically thinking that. If you want to specify a certain point in that person's life that would be fine.
-
first pick:
Martin Luther
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_luther
while he's a bit controversial for his statements on the Jewish people (many of which were later used as nazi propaganda) his greater good was sparking the Reformation that helped turn religion back into a personal choice instead of a government control. He fought for non-Latin translations of the bible and opened the common man's eyes to the truth of their religion; showing that salvation comes through faith alone, not through blindly following religious/political leaders.
-
Nice...
Don't forget to make a second pick. We're in round 2 now.
-
second pick:
Teddy Roosevelt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_roosevelt
The ultimate mans-man cowboy-president, he was a mixed bag of modern political theory... on the one had, he advocated war with Spain and later funded and supported a revolution in panama so we could build and lease a canal from them. On the other hand, he was an environmentalist who preserved hundreds of millions of acres of land and a progressivist who knew that capitalism needs common sense regulation.
-
Nice picks PJ - 2 right out from under me.
-
Pope John Paul II
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_John_Paul_II
incredible human being. I bet conversation with him would never be boring.
-
For my next pic, and continuing with my demented picks, I choose you Marquis de Sade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquis_de_sade
-
Richard P. Feynman
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_P._Feynman
Worked on the Manhattan Project, professional painter, avid musician, loving husband and strip club frequenter, and famed lecturer. Oh, and he was a physicist.
-
Sorry for being late, but here's my man:
John Cleese.
now waiting for the Ob.
-
John D. Rockefeller: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_D._Rockefeller
One rich motha-fucker. And he did some pretty cool stuff too, including some very hefty philanthropy.
-
Sorry for being late, but here's my man:
John Cleese.
now waiting for the Ob.
No worries.
And now you're up again! :)
-
Nero
that fat Roman emperor guy.
-
Ok... second pick:
George Washington
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington
Out of all of USA's founding fathers, I find him to be the most interesting. Among other things, I liked that he apparently didn't let the power of being the first President get to his head and refused to serve more than two terms.
-
Nice Pick.
Let's go with the other founding father and scientist I find fascinating:
President Jefferson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_jefferson)
Followed by:
Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_I_of_England)
I'm with you all on the peak thing - though I should note that I am equally fascinated by many of these people as kids - comes with aspiring to child psychology...So perhaps they could shift ages while they are on the island? :)
-
Albert Einstein
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_einstein
Not being too much of a history buff, it appears I will be mostly picking the more famous historical figures and not so much with the more obscure ones. Still, there is a bunch of stuff in Einstein's life to be interested in, starting with the science but also the two world wars that he lived through and was affected by.
-
I'm with you all on the peak thing - though I should note that I am equally fascinated by many of these people as kids - comes with aspiring to child psychology...So perhaps they could shift ages while they are on the island? :)
Fine by me. When it's time to vote nobody's going to remember what you said, so write whatever information you want and those of us reading through the thread can at least get your thinking as you make the picks.
-
Confucius
He think things.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison
Thomas Edison... light bulb, among others.
-
Napoleon Bonaparte
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon
My two favorite stories about Napoleon: After being exiled on Corsica, he escapes and rides out alone to face the army which has been sent to intercept him. He simply says, "Here I am. Kill your Emperor, if you wish," and they shout "Vive l'Empereur!" and go with him.
The other story is that on the eve before Waterloo, his physician prescribed him narcotics (opium?), and some people speculate that he was still under the influence the next morning, causing him to be sluggish in ordering his troops during battle. In other words, Napoleon's empire finally came to an end because he was high.
-
To provide a counter point to the demented people I've been choosing so far, I'm picking Siddhattha Gotama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddah) this time around.
-
Aristotle - gotta have a philosopher on my island.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristotle
-
Ok, micah timed out. PJ, you can make your picks now if you'd like.
-
I'm sure this guy needs no introduction, Charles Darwin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin
-
And with my second pick, Genghis Khan, not only is he just the badass of badasses but he'll also be useful when I decide to take over some of your islands.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan
-
I'm up again for 2 picks? man, I need to pay better attention. I'll post them when I get to work in a couple hours.
-
Stole my next one PJ *fist shaking ensues*
-
I think it is my turn again. Did he really write all these plays himself? and for entertainment, I present: William Shakespeare
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shakespeare
-
Yeah - thanks a lot PJ and ax - now I have some thinking to do until my turn is up!
::additional fist shaking::
-
a friend of Tesla who wrote some of his best works while living several miles from my own home, my third pick is...
Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Twain
A celebrity in his own day, Twain's writings apparently set new standards for American literature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_literature#Realism.2C_Twain_and_James): "Twain's style – influenced by journalism, wedded to the vernacular, direct and unadorned but also highly evocative and irreverently humorous – changed the way Americans write their language. His characters speak like real people and sound distinctively American, using local dialects, newly invented words, and regional accents."
I think I could have some fun debates with him on my island.
-
Well Jesus was picked in the first round.... so, if Jesus was the Message, then the next best pick would be the messenger:
Paul the Apostle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_of_Tarsus
While the first 4 books of the Bible's New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) speak of the life and times of Jesus, the bulk of the remaining books were written by Paul. These books - most actually letters sent to the churches he founded - go on to explain the meaning of Jesus' life and provide an insight into the beliefs and controversies of early Christianity. They are foundational to Christian theology and ethics.
Granted, Peter, one of the original 12 guys who hung out with Jesus, is often considered the starter of the first "church" of Christianity (Catholics consider him to be the first Pope) -- BUT, I think Paul's works and prolific writings, garner him a top spot in the list of influential historical figures.
-
Nice pickin' folks. And thanks for doing the little write-ups, micah. It's worth the short wait.
-
Well since you're looking to expand you're boarders with Genghis, I got Vlad Dracul http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_tepes to deter you.
-
Well since you're looking to expand you're boarders with Genghis, I got Vlad Dracul http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_tepes to deter you.
I'm assuming you mean Vlad the Impaler/Dracula, right? Apparently Vlad Dracul was his father.
-
You're right - that's what I get for posting when I'm half asleep.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes
"Noli turbare circulos meos"
-
Charles Kettering: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_F._Kettering
They named my university after him and he did some cool shit.
-
Nostradamus
-
The (current) Dalai Lama
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14th_Dalai_Lama
I was sad that Buddha was taken, as was a possible backup in Confucius, so I'll take the current Dalai Lama. He seems to be a cool enough individual who can enlighten me with some eastern philosophy and either argue with or become good buddies with Jesus.
-
A great story teller: Charles Dickens (http://)
A great thinker and Conqueror: Alexander the Great (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_the_Great)
-
By the way, I'm mostly using the default picture from wikipedia for the draft lists on the first page. If you'd like a different picture let me know. Also, I try to list people by the names you refer to them as, but sometimes I make little changes for clarity, but you're free to give me exactly how you want the name to be shown.
-
Socrates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates
Wanted an ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle was already taken, and I only really know of one other guy (who I didn't want). So here we go.
-
Attila the Hun :p
He destroys things.
-
Kim Jong-il - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jong-il
Just admit it, the fucker is crazy and it would be entertaining to watch him.
-
Socrates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates
Wanted an ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle was already taken, and I only really know of one other guy (who I didn't want). So here we go.
Well if you don't want him, I'll take Plato: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plato
Keep in mind, most of what we know of Socrates we know from Plato ;)
-
I'd rather hear it from the horse's mouth. :p
-
Didn't double check to make sure no one had picked him before so if it's a repost let me know -
Alexander I, Tsar of Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_I_of_Russia). I'd like to see him attack Napoleon on the other island since they don't get along :p
-
Nope, you're the first to grab alex 1. Enjoy!
Oh, and axon asked that we skip his turn, so micah, that means you're up!
-
as an employee of the American Radio League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Radio_Relay_League) of which he founded, it is my pleasure to pick...
Hiram Percy Maxim
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiram_Percy_Maxim
His father invented the Machine Gun, he invented the "Silencer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suppressor#History)" He also raced in and won the US's first closed-circuit auto-race.
The FCC wasn't established until 1934 and Maxim's work in amateur radio helped assure that the spectrum would remain free and open for (regulated) public use and not become monopolized by commercial and government interests or become a wild-west mess of constant EM interference.
Countless inventions of the 20th century trace their roots back to "amateur" (meaning non-commercial, private, entities) radio electronics which could not have been possible without the organization of early operators by Hiram Percy Maxim.
-
Even though I'm not religious I would be fascinated to hear about the real life of my next pick, also his opinion on how his life ended up shaping the world, Moses:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses
-
And also need a little entertainment, Elvis Presley (pre-1970's of course):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_presley
-
By the way, micah timed out earlier tonight so drak is up now.
-
I picked Ramses II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramses_II) because I was reminded of the traveling exhibit that visited TX back in the 80s. Apparently, I still have my ticket stub (I'm a pack rat).
-
long before Al Gore invented the Internet to allow the quick and inexpensive mass distribution of written knowledge there was...
Johannes Gutenberg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg
While the idea of movable type preceded Gutenberg in eastern Asia, he was the first to use it with great effect by inventing the printing press. The historical impact of easily disseminated information is self-evident so I doubt I need to write much more here.
-
What's going on here peoples?
This thread was a-hoppin' then - boom. Nothing.
don't make me have to call in favors from my friends at the phone company to get your numbers and I'll have to make threatening phone calls . . . again.
-
JawiB?

don't make me have to call in favors from my friends at the phone company to get your numbers and I'll have to make threatening phone calls . . . again.
It's your turn... we're waiting on you. :)
-
Oh, crap... you picked before micah.
Sorry!!! Didn't see that.
By the way, there's no timeouts over the weekend. I guess JaWiB timed out yesterday so ober's up.
-
Ghandi
-
lets see if I can catch up:
round 5:
Isaac Newton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Newton
Because without him, college would be no fun ;)
-
round 6
Julius Caesar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_caesar
One of the most controversial people in history by changing a republic into an empire.

Sorry, left on Friday to go camping.
My island needs some music, so I pick J.S. Bach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bach
-
Wait... who is up?
-
Think you are.
Axon caught up by picking 2 (round 5 and 6), then JaWib picked for round 6.
-
*snip!*
-
*snip!*
he invented pumpkin pie, right?
-
Wait... who is up?
Think you are.
Axon caught up by picking 2 (round 5 and 6), then JaWib picked for round 6.
Nope... ober already picked Gandhi. Duwenbasden is up.
ober, delete your pick!
-
Sorry I didn't keep the draft board updated... busy weekend. It's all updated now.
Also, I usually have the draft order updated in the first post of the thread and in my most recent post in the thread. You can check there if you're not sure.
-
That's what I thought. Dammit!
-
Good times... somebody's got to go look up the inventor of pumpkin pie and pick him/her before ober's pick comes back around.
-
I think by now Duwenbasden has timed out so I'm going to pick...
Michelangelo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelangelo
My least favorite Ninja Turtle, he's still probably the most interesting Renaissance man behind Da Vinci.
-
Another cool mind/inventor: Alexander Grahm Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Graham_Bell)
I need an ruling/opinion for my next one. I'd like them to count as 1 person, if not I choose Wilhelm (the more literary fun one:
The Brothers Grimm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Grimm)
-

Great pick. I think we have to limit it to just one of them, though. There are just too many duos out there that would be tempting to take as a duo if we had allowed it from the beginning and it would be hard to have a consistent rule.
-
Voltaire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltaire
Sorry... I don't know why I'm picking him.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Colombus
Because I couldn't find an inventor of pumpkin pie.
-
Tough choice, but I need a writer and he was one of my favorites growing up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.R.R._Tolkien
-
Following the trend of having an author, I made a choice, but then changed it to Homer, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer, because I love the Odyssey
-
Damn! That was my next pick!
-
sticking with the theme: ernest hemingway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway
because you know he would be just awesome as fuck to shoot the shit with.
-
Oops.
I'll choose King Arthur (allowed?) and Bruce Lee.
-
I'd say King Arthur is allowed since there is a real possibility he was an actual person.
And I totally didn't see axon's pick last night... updating the board now.
-
Following the trend of having an author, I made a choice, but then changed it to Homer, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer, because I love the Odyssey
I almost picked him too, but I decided against having another ancient Greek on my island

Michael Lang
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lang_(producer) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lang_%28producer%29)
In the 1960's there was a growing subculture of beatniks and degenerates commonly referred to as "the Hippies." Strung out on psychedelic and opiate drugs, they naively envisioned bringing about peace and love through inaction and a lack of personal hygiene.
The movement peaked in 1968 and probably would have dissipated from public view like the last toke of a cannabis cigarette had it not been for a massive music venue staged in upstate New York dubbed the "Woodstock Music & Art Festival" during the summer of 1969.
Lang, the brainchild and promoter of the festival brought an estimated half-million hipsters to the 3 day festival and, while early media reports attempted to show the group as an anarchist mob, when the mud dried and the smoke cleared, it was obvious that peace and love prevailed.
Later attempts to replicate the festival did not end as well but the damage was done: The Hippie movement was legitimized.
The legacy of the hippie movement continues to permeate Western society. In general, unmarried couples of all ages feel free to travel and live together without societal disapproval. Frankness regarding sexual matters has become more common, and the rights of homosexual, bisexual and transsexual people, as well as people who choose not to categorize themselves at all, have expanded. Religious and cultural diversity has gained greater acceptance. Co-operative business enterprises and creative community living arrangements are more accepted than before. Some of the little hippie health food stores of the 1960s and 1970s are now large-scale, profitable businesses, due to greater interest in natural foods, herbal remedies, vitamins and other nutritional supplements. Author Stewart Brand argues that the development and popularization of the Internet finds one of its primary roots in the anti-authoritarian ethos promoted by hippie culture.
...and the products of that movement are the politicians of today.

Who I believe to be the father of modern astronomy, Copernicus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copernicus
-
And arguably the most beautiful woman in the history of the world, Nefertiti:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefertiti
-
And arguably the most beautiful woman in the history of the world, Nefertiti:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefertiti
Hey, I thought we weren't allowed to pick based on hotness! :p
(I'm kidding in case anybody wasn't sure.)
-
FYI... Since the weekend started one minute before micah timed out, he has until 12:01am his time Monday morning to pick.
-
LOL, awesome :)
edit... Monday already? I'll make my pick and jump in soon... but meanwhile, I've otherwise timed out!
-
YOU CAN SKIP ME WHEN MY TURN COMES. oops caps.
-
It was your turn then.... but I guess that means drak can go.
-
Louis Pasteur
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Pasteur
because no one else picked him yet.
-
My pick is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akhenaten, (maybe) the father of monotheism.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.
'Cause he seems like a cool guy
-
Ok, ober timed out. Duwenbasden is up.
-
William Penn - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Penn
Because I know I'm not going to win this one and I didn't feel like looking any harder than that.
-
Shoot... I had a list of ideas on my other machine and now I can't think of any of them. Duwenbasden timed out yesterday and I'm up, I'll pick in a bit.
-
Jimi Hendrix
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix
I'd like a musician on my island. I thought about adding a famous composer, but I'd really rather have someone interesting. For some reason Hendrix stood out in my mind, so there you go.
-
If you need music, may as well get the best: Orpheus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus)
And an interesting woman from common stock who met all the greats of her time: Annie Oakley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Oakley)
-
Ummm... Orpheus wasn't a real person otherwise I would have picked Helen of Troy instead of Nefertiti.
-
He is according to wikipedia - yea so I was wrong...I'll pick again later...
-
Oops... I was thinking Helen of Troy, too.
-
King Leonidas....now back to taking notes in this class...
-
Nelson Mandela
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Mandela
-
Ok, Duwenbasden already timed out and can make two picks at any time. axon can make his pick at any time.
ober, you're up!
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs
Because... I need a nerd on my island.
-
Sorry guys, slipped again, I died of waiting.
My pick of the week would be the glorious Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, the Emperor of the Inca Empire
and Robert Louis Stevenson
-
My favorite explorer, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton
He explored the Antarctic, and although he never made it to the south pole, his attempt to cross the continent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Expedition) is an incredible story. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the book Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.
His family motto is particularly appropriate: "Fortitudine Vincimus" - By endurance we conquer
-
Just to keep things interesting on my island, and maybe to send this person to someone else's island I chose Jack the Ripper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_the_ripper
-
I don't think axon has made up his previous pick, so we can skip him again, that means you're up micah!
-
I haven't said it yet - Charlie i love the sig and th use of colors to clearly indicate where we are in the draft. I use it all the time!
-
I haven't said it yet - Charlie i love the sig and th use of colors to clearly indicate where we are in the draft. I use it all the time!
micah timed out, so PJ can make his picks now.
-
wow, that time went by quick... I'll try a little harder and have my next pick ready soon.
-
Alright, PJYelton timed out, so we swing all the way back around to drakkenkorin. PJ, micah and axon can submit picks at any time.
Only three more rounds to go!
-
Oops, knew I was supposed to do something last night. One of my favorite authors and just an interesting person in general, Ernest Hemingway:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway
-
And I'm a bit surprised this one hasn't been picked yet, but he would be fascinating to talk to for all of the obvious reasons including what Charlie mentioned about Jesus, but my next pick is Muhammad:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad
-
You've probably never heard of my next pic, but IMO one of the most influential goth/darkwave/etc individuals:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rozz_Williams
-
JaWiB timed out yesterday, ober's up!
C'mon folks! Just a couple more rounds to go.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Carnegie
I'm just picking off of the wealthiest list in Wiki now... this draft is kind of boring. :(
-
You have no imagination. :p
What about entertainers? John Cleese was a brilliant pick. Or athletes? Heck, pick one hot babe if you need to, rules be damned (although Queen Elizabeth I is taken).
-
Easily one of the most important women in the history of science: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie
-
I have some catching up to do here...
I've picked a few notables from Christian history (which is at the root of much of modern western civilization) Along that theme...
Constantine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_I
Although the Roman empire was generally tolerant of most religions, nearly three centuries after Jesus, Christ's followers were still being persecuted. Constantine, as emperor, embraced Christianity and signed the Edict of Milan, declaring religious tolerance within the Roman empire. The religion was then free to spread through the vast empire.
-
a second pick...
once upon a time, in a land far away, the creator of the universe told a man named Abraham that he would have a son and the decedents of that child would be greater than the stars in the heavens or the sands on the shore. Abraham's wife was pretty old so, while he had faith in the promise, he thought he'd jump-start the method; specifically, by knocking up his wife's maid.
enter, Ishmael
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmael
Later, it turns out that Abraham's wife DID get pregnant and they had a son name Isaac who had a son name Jacob who had 12 sons (one of which had a technicolor coat) -- and these sons made up the tribes of the Israelites -- one of which included a guy named David who's (eventual) descendant turns out to be none other than freakin' Jesus. Go figure.
Meanwhile, Ishmael, the bastard son of Abraham, also had a future of which I know nearly nothing about. But, traditionally, from his descendants come the Arab folk. Ta-da!
-
oooh, so I missed three huh?
ok, here goes:
Round 8: Pablo Picasso http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Picasso
he just sounds like he would be a fucking riot to be around. Plus he was a pretty good artist ;)
Round 9: Salvador Dali http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvador_Dal%C3%AD
I need a little craziness on my isle - he would probably know which plants are hallucinogens :D
Round 10: Kazimierz Pulaski http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazimierz_Pu%C5%82aski
I need someone to defend my island and keep us all in shape :p
-
Nice! We're all caught up. I've been sweating bullets because I just thought of somebody after my last round who I really want. So far so good. Only one more pick I have to sweat.
-
Ok, Duwenbasden has timed out so I can pick...
Harry Houdini
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Houdini
Shouldn't require much explanation, but I love magic and find the secrets behind it fascinating. I'd love to grill him on his tricks, if only I could force him to tell the truth. Maybe Jesus could help me with that.
-
oops!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Pizarro
Francisco Pizarro, conquistador of the Incas
-
The founder of modern scientific psychology: William James (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_james)
Someone I've always been fascinated by:
Daniel Boone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Boone)
-
And round 11 for me:
Jim Thorpe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Thorpe
As a sports fan, I need an athlete for my island.
-
In class now. I may chang my last pick. I found a cooler psychologist!
-
In class now. I may chang my last pick. I found a cooler psychologist!
Sounds cool. But you can't change your pick!! Sorry. :)
-
Bah - no one else would pick him! :t1:
-
perhaps we could amend the rules for a bonus round that allows for one free trade of an existing pick for a new, previously un-picked, choice?
-
I actually don't think it's that big of a deal. The only problem with that is if somebody wants to swap out a pick that others actually want. Then who gets that person who was de-picked?
In this case I don't mind allowing kermi this one switch, since it would only affect me and I wasn't going to pick that guy anyway. I just like to protect the integrity of the process for the voiceless participants who make these diversions enjoyable.
-
I don't care if I don't get to use him. I have to share:
J. M. Cattell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McKeen_Cattell)
The guy started the first clinical psyc lab, developed psyc into a real science, encouraged the development of conditioning research through his recruitment and mentoring as the Chair of Columia's Psyc department from 1885-WWI - when he was fired for being vocal of his pascifist beliefs (so cool that he stood up when he knew what would happen), he founded the Psychological review (major psyc journal), and was a president of the APA.
Coolest thing though: At age 23, he wanted to study with the worlds leading psychologist - Wilhelm Wundt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Wundt) (the father of experimental psychology," a key figure in the development of intelligence research, and in psychometric testing).
Unfortunately, Wundt was in Germany...so with no appointment or correspondence other than a brief meeting 2 years prior, Cattell when to Germany, sat outside Wundt's office until he returned, and said "You don't know it, but you need a graduate assistant, and it's going to be me." He got the job.
Bad ass scientist for the win.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammurabi
My pick of the day will be the great Hammurabi, with the Code of Hammurabi.
-
>the Code of Hammurabi
I saw that at the Louvre, it was pretty freakin cool. It has all kinds of laws from wages for particular professions to the many reasons a person (or his son) should be put to death. The first law system ever recorded.
-
Pete Rose - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Rose
Because I like Charlie's sports idea.
-
I don't think it's my turn - but skip me.
I'll be here at work enjoying the pleasures of the "End-of-Fiscal-Year".
Which means I'll be stuck in the office until (at the earliest) 2 AM - O JOY!
-
Joy for you. :|
Draft board finally updated.
-
Ok, JaWiB timed out and drakkenkorin is hopefully home from the office by now but asked to be skipped, so axon is up.
-
skip me plz
-
Ok, now micah timed out. Maybe we should have stopped after 10 rounds. :p
I'm going to be off the internet for the rest of the weekend, so police yourselves or wait for Monday. PJ won't time out until then anyway.
JaWiB, drakkenkorin, axon and micah can all make up their missed pick whenever they want.
-
Sorry, been busy with school starting and was having trouble coming up with a good pick. But I think I need more music, and this guy was one of the greats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_mercury
-
First man to step foot on another world, Neil Armstrong:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_armstrong
-
With my last pick I'll go ahead and be a tool and pick Barrack Obama mostly because I'd love to hear his honest take on our present world and would also love to see him debate and share ideas with the others I've picked for my island.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obama
-
Surprised he lasted this long...
-
I seriously considered Obama a few times, but probably wouldn't have picked him unless I just couldn't think of anybody else. I'd love to pick his brain but he just hasn't actually experienced enough compared to some of the others out there.
Anyhoo, the draft board is updated. JaWiB will time out tonight so it will be ober's turn when he wakes up. The three with missing picks can get their last two picks in whenever they want, but they'll have to do it before voting starts, which will probably be next week.
-
>JaWiB will time out tonight
The phrase "Brrrrrrrains...." kept popping up.
-
Time to get caught up:
Pontius Pilate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontius_Pilate) and King Solomon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Solomon)
I didn't check to make sure no one else had picked them, but hopefully no one has.
-
>JaWiB will time out tonight
The phrase "Brrrrrrrains...." kept popping up.
:scratchhead: I don't get it.
Anyhoo... you're up now. ober timed out.
-
I didn't get it either. I still can't decide who my last pick will be, but I'll choose someone before next week
-
my first of two catch-up picks...
If you've seen the movie Braveheart then you probably still known nothing about...
Andrew Moray
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Moray
A freedom fighter and Scottish patriot, Moray lead his army alongside the famed William Wallace, battling to keep Scottish independence against the inevitable English rule.
Unfortunately, he died at the Battle of Sterling Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stirling_Bridge) leaving Wallace to take over the Scottish forces and, eventually fail.
Soon after his death, his wife gave birth to Sir Andrew Murray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Andrew_Murray) who would take up his fathers cause in the 2nd war for independence.
I'm a fairly proud descendant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Murray).
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Ellison
Cuz I need a good database guy on my island.
-
My last pick...
Cleopatra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra_VII
My island had no women, and a lot of goody-two-shoes. So I'm picking her because she's female and possibly a bit conniving.
-
kermi, you're up now. Since you're the last pick, everybody can just pick whenever they feel like it.
I think I'll start the voting Monday, so you all have until then to make up missed picks. If you don't pick by then, that's fine, you just end up with fewer people than others during the voting.
We can post honorable mentions Monday, or after everybody makes up their missed picks.
-
Another recent guy, like or don't like his politics - generally seen as a real good and fun person, though certainly not without flaws:
Ted Kennedy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kennedy)
-
I think I'll go with a poet for my final pick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.S._Eliot
-
Tolkien for me. :D
-
Tolkien for me. :D
Sorry, JaWiB already got him. Unless you're talking about good ole Timmy Tolkien, the famed sculptor. :p
-
Oh noes.
Mel Blanc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Blanc) then. :D
-
my final pick:
Walt Disney
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney
-
Sweet, only axon has any picks left to make up.
-
Sorry... got a little sidetracked on work stuff. The draft is over and we'll start with the tournament as soon as I get my act in gear. axon will just go with ten people.
Meanwhile, feel free to list your honorable mentions. Given how hard it seemed for people to get to twelve there might not be many, but go ahead if you're inclined.
I was considering Van Gogh, Beethoven and Mozart. I really decided against them when I picked Hendrix. I also considered Lincoln. Never got much further than that.
Historical Figures Draft Complete (http://www.entropysink.com/forums/index.php?topic=8864.0)
