Title: Athlon64 Upgrade
Post by: Tman on April 28, 2005, 06:54:36 PM
I ordered this Tuesday night. It should get here by Monday. World of Warcraft is going to be so fast

Clicky (http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishList/WishShareShow.asp?ID=1481565&WishListTitle=Athlon64%20Upgrade)

I think it's a great deal for all that I'm getting, Athlon64, 1GB mem, GeForce 6200 (with turbocache which uses PCIe x16, very fast, have to have a mobo that supports it), and a nice fan that should let me overclock a bit. Hopefully my power supply can take it...

Anyways, what do you think?

That's the same processor I just bought for my new computer, runs really nicely and VERY cool (cold start it's at about 30, hot running it gets at max 42).

wow
my athlon xp 3200+ is currently running at 64C. And that is about as cool as it gets without turning it off.

The AMD 64 chip has a ton of surface area which would explain why it keeps so cool I believe.

you did good except for a few more bucks you coulda gotten a MSI version of that mobo with alot more options, which is a much better board. Also the ram isnt all that great, but it'll do ya.

You have any luck finding drivers for it?  Friend of mine just started runing XP64, but he can't use a lot fo his hardware - like his wireless card.

I've never heard of MSI.. and the RAM shouldn't be all that bad. It's certainly better than what I have. And cheap. And I never heard about hardware problems.. I haven't actually gotten it yet so I wouldn't know. It gets here monday...

Unless i missed something he never mentioed running windows xp 64bit version....and if he cant find drivers tell him to get ahold of me its easy enough.

On to the ram: The maker isnt THAT bad for most hardware, but they build really shotty, low end quality ram. You could have gone with Infineon ram for the same speed, if not a little higher, around the same price. Its not a well known or even advertised fact, but Infineon is manufactured by kingston and comes with a pretty good warranty (lifetime).

The system will run well, i would just suggest upgrading the ram somewhere down the line before making any other higher end upgrades, its going to be a bottleneck otherwise : )
