Music recording
« on: May 12, 2005, 03:02:46 AM »
I have a mic plugged directly into my sound card and the sound quality is perfect.
I also have my guitar amp's line out going straight into the line in of my sound card. Now, the problem is that it records extremely quietly. At first I thought it wasn't working until I added a compression effect to make the sample louder. Using the compression effect works ok I get pretty good sound quality but I was wondering if any of you guys know of any way that I can just have my amp going straight to the computer and recording at normal level. I've considered a mixer but what if that doesn't work, then it will be a waste of my money and even if it does work, using a mixer seems like overkill. Keep in mind I have NO MONEY!

Moved to Music - dunno, just seems to fit better there.

Now, to your question.

Generally speaking, plugging a guitar straight into a soundcard will pretty much suck. Due to the different impedances (guitars are hi-z, soundcard inputs are lo-z) you will get low volume and loss of top-end.

Normal solutions would be DI boxes, or my personal favourite a guitarport ( http://www.guitarport.com ) - about $99.

You could also try this http://fs_freeware.home.att.net - at the bottom of the page is Free Amp SE. The impedance matching is still gonna suck IMHO though.

You can get behringer stuff for small amounts of cash too - maybe something like this http://www.behringer.com/DI20/index.cfm?lang=ENG (disclaimer - I have not tried one) at around $30.

HTH.

Oh bollox. Just re-read your question - you said line out. What kind of amp? That should work.

Left the above for reference anyway.

Well Like I said the sound quality is reasonable but it records too quietly. It is actually a bass amp that I'm using. Hartke B120.

why not put a mic near the amp and record that way? it won't be perfect, but it's as accurate as any other method

Are you setting your recording levels high enough on the sound card for the line in? That would be my first guess. Just checking.

No dude, you don't want soundblaster. For recording I don't think anything beats the prosumer M-Audio stuff (unless you get really serious about stuff).
