Title: Essentials
Post by: Govtcheez on January 29, 2008, 07:45:38 PM
ethic asked me to make this and sticky it, so I'm gonna do what he wants because he's much better than I am.  You guys can post albums you consider essentials in every genre in here.

Starting things off with some rap, since that's the thread that started it:

Makaveli: The Don Killuminati (http://www.amazon.com/Don-Killuminati-Day-Theory/dp/B0008237BY/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201717755&sr=8-2)
This was his last real album. Came out about 2 months
after he died. This is the only one of his that I still own.

Makaveli: TDK Singles:
Toss it Up (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VXhkIIDzT-Q) (last verse is all about how much Dre sucks)
Hail Marry (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ScUVaubGMJ4&feature=related)
To Live & Die in LA (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vVPtZywtwwo)

All Eyez On Me (http://www.amazon.com/All-Eyez-Me-2Pac/dp/B00005AQE8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201717861&sr=1-2).
But I can't remember how good that one is, as I haven't
owned it for about 10 years. It's the CD with California
Love on it, though.

2Pac- Greatest Hits (http://www.amazon.com/2Pac-Greatest-Hits/dp/B00000FCBH/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201718495&sr=8-1)
But you probably can't go wrong with the Greatest Hits
double disc.

Awesome non-LP songs:
Wanted Dead or Alive (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qrwUqSCkidc)
From the Gridlock'd Soundtrack, which I don't own anymore.
Can't remember if it's worth picking up.

Thug Luv w/ Bone Thugs (http://youtube.com/watch?v=r4Uw493sN5Y)
Wrong and recorded his verse in 15 minutes; or so's the
legend. :)

The thing about 2pac is that he's become totally exploited
after his death. There have probably been more discs released
after he died, than when he was alive. And these are all
produced by people that didn't know him (Eminem); there are
phony collaborations, etc. It's probably to the point now where
they're taking segments from past interviews, splicing them
together to find rhymes, and overlaying them over beats

Essential Bone Thugs & Harmony. They didn't really start
to suck until '99. Singles and stand-out songs in bullets.

Bone Thugs & Harmony - East 1999 Eternal (http://www.amazon.com/E-1999-Eternal-Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony/dp/B00000DHSE/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201718997&sr=1-1)

British Post-Punk

Public Image Ltd - Public Image (1978)

An absolute essential.  Released in 1978, this album more or less set the bar for the future punk music.  John Lydon (nee Johnny Rotten) absolutely goes off his nut, fuming about Malcolm McClaren, tories, religion and everything inbetween.  It makes his turn on Bollocks seem tame by comparison.  Jah Wobble's dubby bass lines dominate and Keith Keith Levene's razor sharp guitar lines slice your brain as much as your ears.  Somewhere, a young Edge and Bono were taking notes.

More to come
